My Bell satellite 9400 receiver keeps trying to tune channel 1911 NPAS to show me an amber alert from Orilla ON but I'm in Ottawa. It's been doing it all night. This is extremely annoying!!! I can't watch tv.

The fact that it cut off my recording is the big issue. I could deal with just switching it back but not when it cuts off my recordings on the other channels. I was watching a recording from earlier and also recording two new programs.

@james039 At least you are close to Orillia. I'm in Thunder Bay and we got the message as well. The stupid computerized voice can't even say Orillia right.

Not sure why they're hijacking the whole channel for this. Can't they do a scroller on the bottom of the screen? This is overkill and I feel it's unreasonable.

That is what they are required to do.

Who decided this? Would a complaint to the CRTC be appropriate? Who should I voice my concerns to?

I'm seeing the same alert on Global via antenna. They go province-wide.

Wow, was this warning ever LOUD (first time I've encountered it but was aware it was possible based on this thread), and for an amber alert many km from where I am, that was repeated several times. Why not make it head-end specific for cable providers so that people unaffected don't have to put up with this?

Overkill

- On the volume
- On the lack of location specificity
- On the repeats.
- If this wrecks recordings as it appears to do for some people, worse still. I was watching a recording, but was not recording at the time so I don't know if recordings are affected.

The system needs fine tuning.

People on the Rogers forum are going bananas. 50 posts in under 2 hours.

Edit - as an FYI, it's a pop-up on my 9865 and I was able to hit "exit" to end the alert and the loud audio and went back to watching my recording after the short interruption. I didn't even bother to rewind since the entire event was only a few seconds each time with me hitting the exit key really fast. I didn't even bother to wait for the scroll to finish since I don't wish to know about an amber alert in Orillia.

This isn't about the alerts, this is about the ham handed way Bell has implemented it on their 9400 receiver. It keeps trying to change the channel onto an alert channel. This could have been handled much better than they did. It's a dual tuner PVR. Why can't they pause my show? It turns off my show to tune into an alert channel and if I try to turn it back it keeps tuning out. There's no way this exact behavior was government mandated. This is insane.

@57 I disagree. With something as serious as a kidnapping, everyone should get info so that the kidnapper and victim can be found as soon as possible even if it is 1000 kms away.

@DSgamby , we'll have to disagree then. There was no kidnapping. The other day a father walked off an elevator leaving his child behind and if I recall correctly it took about 5 hours to find the child. I didn't want to hear about that either all night.

There has to be a certain level of emergency and I would like to hear about a tornado in my area, but not a missing child in Orillia. Call me cold-hearted if you wish.

This should not be inflicted on people who don't want it. I should have the option (beforehand) to turn it off (not have it come up), or at least mute it (have the alert be silent, but visible).

It may also be possible to have certain levels of alerts - one for Amber alerts and a different one for a tornado coming, so that people can react/choose which they wish to hear and which not.
kcbrk32 and gzink like this.

I see from the CRTC link in post 1 that Amber Alerts are included.

Archived - CRTC requires broadcasting industry to relay emergency alert messages to Canadians - Canada News Centre

I disagree with this, especially if the alert is distant. Amber alerts happen way too often.
