USB 2.0 would be more than adequate for HD. I don’t think any of Shaw Direct’s HD feeds are higher than 10 Mbps (and the MPEG 4 feeds would be even lower than that). USB 2.0 can handle that easily.
The power requirements of an external drive are more dependent on the drive than anything else. A USB flash drive uses very little power, but an external 3.5” mechanical hard drive would likely need a separate power source.
