The Shaw Direct webpage for the 830 doesn't mention the size of the 830 Hard Drive; that should be of great interest for 630 folks

"You can record over 300 hours of HD" on the 830. My guess is the calculation is based on MPEG-4 compression, which would put the hard drive size at 1 TB and is pretty standard for the newer PVRs.

Re: manuals - I checked the FCC site since the manufacturer is required to submit the hardware manuals. Unfortunately, Arris has requested confidentiality for 180 days on the manuals and photos that would show dimensions.

What about a device like HD Fury? Wouldn't that work with Slingboxes?

An installer was here today to move my dish as a tree had grown in front of it. He had a box of 830's. They are actually smaller than the 630 although about half inch higher, but more than 1 inch less from front to back. He had some interesting information which I will share but of course may not be true. He said that Shaw was about to release the 730 when they started to work with a gateway system and delayed it to the 830 which is hoped will be able to use that in future. So they are apparently working to make the 830 a whole home, multi tuner receiver. He claimed that the 830's would run cooler with no need for a "big" fan. He had played with one briefly and noticed it to be much quicker in response. All very interesting if true. He said he had 3 630's left and then he would be installing 830's. He also mentioned that everything was being kept secret for no good reason that he could think of.
I went into 2 retailers yesterday. One had 2 receivers (630) and the other (Best Buy) had none. "We usually have a shelf full of Shaw Direct receivers. I don't know when or if we will get more." He speculated the Shaw Direct might stop supplying retailers and only ship direct. (AS Telus is doing)

Hi Bigoranget,

I was not aware of HD Fury equipment. Have you or anyone else used one?

Price is a little steep at $179 for cheapest model without knowing if it actually works.

Until we actually have a manual that describes in detail what the device can do I will hold off buying one especially for the external drive support.

Where have we heard a rumor like that before? Anyone remember the 500 series that would support MPEG4 in the future? I'll wait until I see whole home actually working before I rush out and buy a new Shaw receiver.

And don't forget that the 530 would soon be able to dual record both tuners at the same time while playing back previously recorded programs.

Has anyone ordered the 830?
I would like to read a review before making a decision and get one.

Question 630 manual used for 830

I spoke to a Shaw Direct representative. She told me that SD has all of the ARRIS 830 specifications and they are not confidential. I asked why the links on the SD 830 webpage link to a 2014 630 PVR manual. She checked it out while on hold. She was surprised and said that the 830 manual should be linked with that 830 webpage. She told me that, while on hold, she started an escalation on the matter.

I read that this bad link was brought to the attention of SD days ago.

Probably because the Shaw 830 has a bunch of features disabled so they are still working on deletes in the manual.
