5xx series future obsolete MPEG4

I understand that all 5xx series are not compatible with MPEG4 (MPEG-4). If all channels where MPEG4, then these units would be totally obsolete.

Does any one knows if Shaw Direct has any plan to convert some, many or all existing non MPEG4 channels to MPEG4 channels in any short future. If yes, what would be a reasonable timeline for that conversion.

Reason i am asking is that a potential buyer for my 530 called shaw and they told him that the 530 would not be working soon. That would really made some people upset...

I guess Shaw wanted to sell him a new receiver instead.

Thanks

Yes, if channels were to go MPEG4 only, 505/530 and older receivers would become totally useless.

As it stands now, there are no plans (I know of, mostly reading here) for existing regular channels to change how they are delivered, so for now there will be little change in what your 5xx can receive.

There is more than the 5xx receivers, there is a whole cacaphony of 2xx/3xx and 4xx receivers still in use.

I reckon they might not want to activate it and have to pay for a warranty replacement.

I would say it will be at least a few years before any current HD channels on F1R or F2 goes MPEG-4. Shaw Broadcast dictates the terms when this happens as they are the commercial distribution arm for many BDUs in Canada.
