The cost of LNBF upgrades is a red herring. It will need to be done for either G1 or MPEG4. It's inevitable so citing the delay of G1 is an invalid excuse. Shaw has made promises to the CRTC regarding rolling out MPEG4 and adding extra channels. By the looks of it, Shaw is now using the delay of G1 as an excuse to delay both. Sorry Shaw, you can roll out MPEG4 and add extra channels without G1. The receiver swaps and LNBF upgrades are inevitable so why not do them now? I've already my opinions about Shaw management on that question.

Reverse Direct Broadcast Service (DBS)?

In the specs of this New Satellite Anik G1 It says that there is going to be
one reverse Direct Broadcast Service (DBS) band.
These are usually used for communications from the user back up to the satellite, are the new LNB's and receivers going to have that capability?

For you lawyer types, here is the legal jargon on reverse DBS.

If Life is a Highway,...then why is there no end to this dirtroad?

I'd reckon no. More technologically astute people will probably have network for smart back channel, and it would cost too much for users and providers, for two way satellite receivers.

You will need another new LNBF to use the reverse DBS capabilities regardless.

This is what SD Emailed me this morning upon me asking them if anything will be done too get us more HD channels before Anik G1 launch in May month.

Thank you for taking the time to email us; we can certainly help you with this.

First, we would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused by the delayed launch of ANIK G1 and we would like to continue to support our customers with their viewing needs. At this time, the 2 satellites we are using now are completely full of the current channels we offer and this is why there are some delays on the HD programming we are able to provide. That being said, we are looking into ways around this (such as using the MPEG4 compression and removing unpopular channels) and we will continue to look into other options. In the end, we appreciate your patience during this time and please know you may contact us at any time if you have any further questions.

should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us and please include any previous correspondence with your replies.

Thank you for choosing Shaw Direct,

I wouldn't expect much of anything before the launch of Anik G1. Even if they convert some channels to MPEG-4, that will take months to implement.

Either way, it will still be at least a 3-4 month wait before anything gets added. I would hope that Shaw Direct is working on a plan B in case G1 isn't operational by the end of June. They have to add all the LPIF channels before June 30th.

i just dont understand why the need for those channells. i understand the crtc mandated it but if you need to see the toronto evening news with your local comercials then people should get an antenna or shaw should offer a dish mountable one like directv and dish used to do in the states and if you cant get it with that ohwell. all these extra local channels are going to do is drive up bills

you would think it would be cheaper to compress everthing to mpeg 4 and just give people the recievers they needed than launch a new sat. also the crtc could speed this up by letting providers from the south come up, i bet shaw and bell would have no trouble getting there act together then. lol

This is dragging out worse than the NHL Lockout did! LOL .... OK, so lets hypothetically say G1 is in fact up on the current launch date. Once it's up there, how long realistically would it be before we see any programming changes?? I think it is pretty naive for any of us to believe that the HD flood gates will automatically open the instant G1 is up.

In May 2012 (approx.), Bell TV's new satellite was launched. It was a replacement unit for one of their originals.

They had it up & running within 6 - 8 weeks.

I expect the same time frame for Anik G1.

March would be nice but Satlaunch indicates May and Lygnsat indicates delayed.

I think the launch date is still TBD

Get your information from the official site!

Satlaunch & lyngsat are just rumor sites.

If you go to the Russian Space Web site it is the official source for Proton launch information.
The dates could still change but right now the official date is March 16th.
