What new channels will be added once this satellite is launched?? Will there be a lot of extra "local" channels?? I'm thinking about getting cable again which has better HD offerings.

Dec 8 - another Proton Anomaly

SatMex 8/Anik G1 launches on hold.

Incompetent Russians at it again

Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center (Khrunichev) and International Launch Services (ILS) regret to announce an anomaly during the launch of the Yamal 402 satellite. The satellite had been built by Thales Alenia Space for Russian satellite operator, Gazprom Space Systems.

The Proton Breeze M rocket lifted off at 7:13 p.m. today local time from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, carrying the Yamal 402 satellite. Preliminary flight information indicates that the 4th and final burn of the Breeze M engine ended about four minutes early and subsequently separated the spacecraft.

Thales Alenia Space is recalculating all the Launch Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) parameters in order to propose the possible recovery plans to Gazprom Space Systems.

A Russian State Commission will begin the process of determining the reasons for the anomaly. ILS will release details when data becomes available. In parallel with the State Commission, ILS will form its own Failure Review Oversight Board (FROB). The FROB will review the commission’s final report and corrective action plan, in accord with U.S. and Russian government export control regulations.
Time for Telesat to look for more reliable launch sources for future satellites.

3 malfunctions of the 4th stage in the last 5 launches.

You can be sure that the insurance companies have already phoned Satmex and Telesat with the "your launch insurance is cancelled" message.

Time for Shaw to give Motorola a P.O. for 2 million more 6xx units. It's time for Plan B Shaw - convert F1R/F2 to MPEG4.

Links to news about Russian stupidity - looks like corruption in their space program is catching up to them. Stop buying those Chinese chips with stolen US technology.

New tentative launch date is May 27/13. Actual date will affected by outcome of Russian inquiry into ILS.

As posted by someone earlier, launch insurance has been suspended.

All ILS launches are on hold until further notice. Expect a 60 to 120 day delay depending on the identification of 4th stage Proton problems. This could lead ultimately to the bankruptcy of Satmex.

When I called to cancel my service, a CSR told me the launch date is January. She had not heard about the delay til May. Guess it doesn't matter to me, though. She also didn't know what channels would be added when it does launch.

Front line CSRs never have current information but rest assured the launch is a no go for January.

I was told last March (2012) by a CSR that the satellite had already been launch. That is just one of the many answers have received from Shaw Direct CSR's regarding the Satellite. We also are long time subscribers (well over 10 years) it's time Shaw D becomes a lot more transparent with what is their progress on this.

With the constant delays of the launch think it is time they decide to roll out updated receivers (DSR 600) and change to mpeg4. We also are not going to hang around much longer, as other providers keep adding more HD channels.

ILS is going to do a total review of the 4th stage of the Proton

Expect 6 to 12 month delay - looks like July to Dec 2013 launch window for G1.

Time for the F2 MPEG4 changeover Shaw - get going on this. The CRTC has already told you no further delay for locals addition past June 30

It seems Donnybrook is half right. A review of the article he quoted from Dec 17th indicates that the 6 to 12 month review will happen, but that the bulk of the review of the Briz-M will happen after launches resume next year.

Also, Interfax has released the following information as of Dec 21st

"The Russian aerospace industry continues to investigate the Briz-M upper stage failure in the launch of a Proton-M rocket with the Yamal-402 satellite, a Baikonur source told Interfax. The working group is studying documentation and modeling processes, which might have caused the accident. There will be no Proton launches until the work is done. Therefore, the launch of the Satmex8 Mexican satellite has been postponed. "All launches planned for the first quarter of 2013 will be delayed as well," the source said.

The Anik G1 Canadian telecom satellite was due to arrive in Baikonur in the middle of December. Its launch had been planned for the end of January 2013. Now the Anik G1 project would have to wait until Samtex8 is out of the clean room at the Baikonur assembly station and that won't happen until late January.

There will be delays in launching Eutelsat-3D (planned for the second half of February) and Astra 2E (due in March)."

This seems to estimate a launch for Anik G1 in late March (approximately a 6 week window after it arrives in the Baikonur clean-room).
