UPDATE:

August 16 - ITAR-TASS reported that the failure was caused by a blocked pressurization line in the Auxiliary Propellant Tank that resulted from a manufacturing fault.

ITAR-TASS also reported Vladimir Popovkin as saying there was no danger of an explosion of the Briz-M because internal pressures in the propellant tanks had been reduced to zero. NOTE - this probably explains the small orbit change of the Briz-M late August 7 or early August 8 (thrust caused by release of pressurizing gas).

While all launches are still suspended (have been since the failure), the only launch officially postponed is the launch of Intelsat 23, which has been postponed indefinitely. All other dates are still a go for now. Notice I said "for now".

Theoretically the could choose a different agency, but that would even further delay and cost them, as the satellite will at least need moved to the new launch centre, and probably de-mounted from the Briz-M, shipped, and mounted to the alternate launch platform . Plus a rocket, fuel, and a launch slot will need made available. My bet is they have launches scheduled years in advance, and it would cost quite a lot to bump a launch for an "emergency" commercial launch.

Practically, changing launch agencies won't happen. It will be easier and cheaper to ride out the issues.

This is what I have saying all along. Shaw Direct should have been migrating SD and HD channels to MPEG-4 and not wait for Anik G1 to launch in order to get more HD. I figure there was little to no chance of seeing Anik G1 launched on time.

Shaw could implement MPEG4 before the launch but all it would do is make room for Canadian network channels and more simsubs. By waiting for Anik G1, they have the opportunity to add content of real perceived value along with those.

What does this mean in respect to the new channels that Shaw Direct is supposed to launch?? With the delay of the satellite launch does this mean we will not get the channels for some long period of time??

I would say that is exactly what it means. More delays, meanwhile other providers get more HD channels.

Most likely unless Shaw stops being stubborn and starts migrating existing services to MPEG-4. That will at least allow them to start adding more of the specialty HD channels and perhaps a few locals from Toronto and Vancouver.

The thing to take from this is, don't expect much this calendar year and perhapse even the first half of next year (depending on the length of the delay)

There is nothing on Shaw Direct's website about a delay in the satellite launch. I also checked their Facebook and Twitter pages, nothing. As far as other providers go, our local cable company has more HD channels. I can't speak for others.

Shaw Direct only has very general information on their website. It's not going to advertise a delay in the launch of Anik G1.

If anything the page that talks about the new satellite will likely change from saying coming "fall 2012" to "Coming Soon". If the delay is really long, they will likely "quietly" remove reference to it on their website.

I finally gave up on Shaw Direct earlier this month because I know they will never have a competitive HD line-up.

So I guess we have to wait about another 6 months to see what the new channels will be, unless they announce them sooner.

Most of the new channels will merely increase simsubs. Shaw is one of the worst when it comes to adding new specialty channels, especially those owned by broadcasters based in Eastern Canada. I would really like to see TMC HD added but I'm not counting on it.
