ILS Proton Successfully Launches Anik G1 for Telesat

From the link

The ILS Proton lifted off from Pad 39 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome at 12:36 a.m. today local time (April 15: 6:36 p.m. GMT and 2:36 p.m. EDT). Utilizing the standard 5-burn Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) mission design, the Breeze M successfully released the Anik G1 satellite into orbit after a 9 hour and 13 minute mission.

Anik G1 will be positioned at 107.3 degrees West longitude where it will be co-located with Telesat’s Anik F1 satellite effectively doubling both the C-band and Ku-band transponders serving South America from the 107.3 degrees West orbital location.

I believe Telesat takes over from here. They usually are making adjustments and testing for 3-4 weeks. I'd imagine by Mid-May Shaw Direct will be able to start utilizing the transponders.

On channel 988 it says June month but I hope it's sooner. It says launching over 100 New HD channels this June.

15 years is typical.

Shaw is just a tenant. Telesat is who has to plan for a replacement.

AFAIK, The X-Ku license is a one time thing, so unless they get an exception, any replacement satellite may not have Canadian X-Ku capability.

There is 1 Reverse DBS transponder on G1 for testing purposes. If Shaw Direct is still in business when F2 is to be replaced (2022 to 2023 timeframe); Telesat wants the option of launching a Ku/Reverse DBS satellite to offer 64 transponders.

I'm not washed up yet

I don't think I have ever used that acronym, but this time it's appropriate. Glad I wasn't drinking coffee or it would have gone out my nose.

According to the SD marketing people the new satellite is "carrying a full payload of the best HD content in the solar system."

Beam is the "newest member of the team" then you click on the link and "he's been up here for 15 years" tending to their satellites.

Who writes this stuff? 16 year olds for 8 year olds?

Or do 30 somethings actually believe a robot has been floating around in space maintaining Telesat satellites on behalf of Shaw!!!

Anyway we won't get anymore info until it's "in orbit".

It's a marketing strategy, and if people are talking about it - regardless of whether it's positive or negative - it seems to be working!

Is it any different from when Bell used the beavers? Gzink, as snickerdoodles stated, it's a marketing strategy. Grab yourself a beer and take life a little less seriously
