Shaw has 1.1 mil subscribers just on cable
dimdim, you're not even close. Shaw has 2.27 million cable customers. Shaw has 1.08 million digital cable customers. Source: Shaw Financial statements as of Feb 29, 2009.

I would ask that newcomers wishing to post, do their homework. Posting customer counts that are inaccurate is trolling. I have asked moderators of this thread to remove any future posts where people make customer counts without proper attribution. It wastes our time and simply sows seeds of confusion.

I am a shareholder - Hugh posted the correct numbers from the latest financials.

SC has had well over 1.5m new customers since 1997 - unfortunately they have lost over 600,000 of them.

If they claim they have 1M now, must be the same Math that Wall Street used from 2002 to 2008

The announcement of 1 million was related to how many receivers they have activated and going , not how many customers there are.

And the simple fact that you don't know how many subscribers you have is a sad commentary on Star Choice.

No. Star Choice has over 2 million receivers activated.

Please no more comment on this. The subscriber numbers are publicly released in audited financial statements so there is no argument over them. The19duke21 is misinformed and we'll leave it at that.

I wonder if the 'Direct' means they are sowing the seeds for 'DirecTV Canada' although without using that actual name, hence keeping Shaw in the name?! They do use the same receivers as DirecTV if I am not mistake, not that that reallly means anything.

Anything is possible especially if the feds open the foreign ownership gates a little

In any event, I think its a stupid name and looks like they are just following Bell's lead

Plato: 'double' ignorance, which is the error of a man who is not only in the grip of ignorance but on top of that is convinced of his own wisdom, believing that he has a thorough knowledge of matters of which, in fact, his ignorance is total (Laws 863c).

.... love it.

Shaw (Cable) and Rogers Atlantic (Cable) also use Motorola equipment, but a Mercedes SL550 is not the same thing as an ML550.

Star Choice along with Bell, DirecTV, and Echostar all use "direct to home" satellite technology, hence the same Shaw Direct. No mystery and no reason for conspiracy theories.

Nope. Not sure who manufactures DirecTV receivers, as they are DirecTV branded, but it's not Motorola.

Those two - DirecTV and StarChoice - are different starting with the LNB polarization.
SC uses the real FTA type, linear (mostly), DTV - circular. Frequencies are different, too.
That pretty much excludes any overlap in components, regardless of manufacturer.

bundling might happen soon

hi, I just spoke with Shaw direct and they said that half of there calls today are asking about bundling shaw services together, and this one rep i spoke to said he has answered about 30 calls alone today about bundling. the employees guess that anytime now they are going to start offering bundle discounts. if shaw direct starts bundling with internet i will probably switch to shaw internet thanks
