My sister has ADT in her house in Toronto. She'd like to get rid of her landline and go with something less expensive, as she almost never uses it, at least for voice calls.
ADT is telling her three different stories about what they support other than landlines. Can anyone tell me: Does ADT support anything other than a landline connection for their alarm systems?
If so, any idea the cost, reliability and hassle this would involved?
I'm an ex-IT tech, but my sister is like Alicia Silverstone when it comes to tech-clueless.
Most Alarm Companies have an option to use a cellphone, however, that service usually cost more and sometimes requires a different panel.
I use The Monitoring Center, which is significantly less expensive than ADT and serves the GTA. You can see the various options, service areas, etc. on their website.
I have often considered getting rid of my (Rogers) landline, however, I pay so little for it as part of my package (and it offers me Home and Away Voicemail, good voice quality, etc) that it's not worth increasing my Alarm System costs, which are currently $10/month with TMC.
Alarm systems with true VOIP can be problematical for those not technically inclined, therefore I wouldn't consider that option for your (tech-clueless) sister.
I have found TMC good to deal with, despite the fact that I'm paying so little. I was previously with ADT (on a much-reduced rate) and TMC used my "old" panel (DSC PC1500). There is a "reprogramming fee", but you make that back in no time. If you need a new panel, of course then you either pay for it up front (usually cheaper), or pay more per month...
Cell is optional or included depending on the plan. They don't seem to give pricing on their website other than their most basic $25/mo. If you want cell, then I'm pretty sure you'd probably be looking at a minimum $35/mo, if not more.
I've always been able to negotiate with outfits that do this. For example, I was paying $18/mo with ADT until recently when they wanted to increase monthly rates and I switched to TMC.
