Where to Use Apple Pay in Canada

Curious about Apple Pay and where to use it in Canada? Here’s a run down:

Apple Pay is one of the newest contactless ways to pay for products and services. Not quite useable everywhere, its acceptance is growing in Canada, and while it could take a while for more people to come on board, there are definite benefits to using it.

Here’s a quick run down of how and where it works, for those who need a refresher:

Users with an iPhone 6, 6S, SE or an Apple Watch can make purchases with Apple Pay.

Apple Pay uses credit cards and debit cards uploaded in a user’s Wallet app to make purchases at store checkouts and online.

To use it, hold your iPhone close to the payment reader with your finger on Touch ID or double-click the side button on your Apple Watch. Then, hold it near the reader to make a purchase.

How Can You Use It?

In Canada, Apple Pay works with America Express, Mastercard, Visa, Interac, and with debit and credit cards from BMO, Desjardins, Scotiabank, CIBC, ATB Financial, Canadian Tire Bank, PC Financial, RBC, and TD Bank.

It can be used anywhere contactless payment is accepted. Simply look for the Apple Pay symbol at checkout.

Extras? Users can also use Apple Pay to pay for some of the most popular apps in the App Store, and for items available on the web when using Safari, at select retailers.

There is no need to create an account or log in, and the service is available when shopping on an iPhone, iPad or a Mac.

While many still remain skeptical about the whole thing, part of the beauty of Apple Pay, besides added convenience when shopping, is that it can be safer to use than your actual credit and debit cards.

How Does it Work?

The fact is, your payment information is never shared by Apple with retailers when you pay for something.

How does it work? Apple creates a device-specific number and a unique transaction code with each purchase. Because of this, your card number isn’t ever stored on your device or Apple’s servers.  Furthermore, it’s never shared by Apple with any merchants. Win-win.

In addition, for better or for worse, Apple doesn’t keep a long history of your transaction information aside from recent purchases. That stays secret, too.
