Survey Finds Canadian SMBs Gaining Productivity with Mobile Devices

As the use of smartphones and tablets continues to multiply, Canadian business owners are reaping work-related benefits.

Sage North America recently surveyed 476 small and midsized businesses in Canada and found the use of mobile technology is having a positive impact on productivity.

Eighty-three percent of SMB respondents say mobile phones and tablets have a positive effect on their business operations, while just one percent claim a negative impact. Furthermore, 78 percent of respondents are using devices to access work-related information.

Nancy Harris, senior vice president and general manager of Sage 50 Accounting, said: “Businesses should continue to take advantage of mobile devices. By capitalizing on the growing trend of work being conducted on smartphones and tablets, businesses can not only increase productivity, but also give their employees the flexibility of being able to conduct work whenever and wherever they are. This ability to work remotely not only helps add to the bottom line, but may also be seen as a benefit to prospective employees.”

About 45 percent of companies surveyed already have a “bring your own device” policy (BYOD) in place while 35 percent still have not considered this option. Another nine percent have considered, but decided against a BYOD strategy for their businesses.

Harris believes business decision makers may be better off establishing a BYOD policy in order to protect their company’s proprietary data because more employees are conducting work activities on mobile devices. The Sage mobile survey found that smartphones are used for work more than 59 percent of the time.

Sage has been supplying business management software and services to small and midsized businesses worldwide since 1981.

Interesting article indeed. Businesses are, at last, starting to change their workflow in order to integrate mobile and tablet. Both devices are bringing separate productivity gains to the mobile and non-mobile workers.

Integrating those new workflow into businesses existing Information system will probably takes a few more years.
