Apple’s App Store Tops 40 Billion Downloads

Apple announced on Jan. 7th that its App Store has crossed 40 billion downloads.

The new milestone was achieved with an extremely strong 2012, with nearly 20 billion downloads taking place. Furthermore, a whopping 2 billion apps were downloaded in December alone.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services said: “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”

The App Store, now available in 155 countries worldwide, currently boasts 500 million active accounts and more than 775,000 apps.

Helping Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) with the torrid pace are successful games such as Temple Run, which has recently hit 75 million downloads on iOS.

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced in late September that its Google Play store for Android has enjoyed 25 billion downloads, and more than 700,000 apps were available as of early November.
