Cogeco Expanding Data Centre Operations With New Montreal Facility

Communications giant Cogeco Inc. (TSX:CGO) plans to expand its data centre footprint to take advantage of the exploding cloud computing and Web hosting market in Canada.

That market, a relatively new revenue stream for Cogeco, is expected to generate a billion dollars by 2014 according to IDC.

Under the Cogeco Data Services division, which started in 2008, the company will add a 100,000 square foot facility in Montreal by 2014, representing approximately $100 million in investment over the next few years.

Currently, Cogeco manages five data centres in Toronto and one in Vancouver.

Louis Audet, CEO of Cogeco, told the audience at The Canadian Club of Montreal on Sept. 26: “Cogeco is firmly committed to opening a new chapter in the telecommunications technology
revolution. The emphasis today is on mobility and multiple platforms. This transformation in the use of technology has led to the phenomenon of cloud computing, in which Cogeco Data
Services is a dominant player.”

TELUS, Primus and Bell Canada, through the pending acquisition of Q9 Networks, are also prominent players in the cloud hosting field as are hundreds of Canadian Web hosts including iWeb, PEER 1 Hosting and Canada Web Hosting.
