The Hangover Part II tops last week’s DVD sales charts

The American comedy film “The Hangover Part II” was the top selling movie in North America last week, while Cowboys and Aliens took top spot on the rental charts according to figures published today by Rentrak.

The sequel to 2009’s The Hangover takes place two years later when Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug travel to Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After a pre-wedding brunch, the four somehow manage to wake up in a dirty hotel room in Bangkok and the adventure begins.

The Hangover Part II grossed over $580 million at the box office and had the highest-grossing worldwide opening ever for a comedy film.

Despite the big box office numbers, the movie received mostly negative reviews from film critics with just a 35% approval rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 221 reviews with an average rating of 5/10, and the consensus: “A crueler, darker, raunchier carbon copy of the first installment, The Hangover Part II lacks the element of surprise — and most of the joy — that helped make the original a hit.”

Todd Phillips directed the film in addition to co-authoring the script with Craig Mazin, and Scott Armstrong. The film stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis.
