CityNews Channel coming to Toronto this fall

Rogers Broadcasting announced today that it will launch CityNews Channel, a 24/7 English language news station, in Toronto this October.

In addition to competing against local news broadcasts, the station will compete for audience against Bell Media’s local CP24 news station and National News channels such as CBC News Network, CTV News Channel, and Sun News.

Perhaps realizing the station would likely not survive as an over-the-air station which relies solely on advertising revenue, Rogers will launch the station as a digital cable specialty channel station whose primary source of revenue is monthly fees paid by cable and satellite television subscriber.

No word on how much extra cable and satellite users will be expected to pay for the station or whether the cost will simply be buried in next year’s television price increase.

Okay so you wanna charge ads to run your channel AND charge the audience to watch them?

How greedy can you get Rogers ? Even in the life after.

Sorry Hugh that’s a little unclear…so it’s ONLY on cable, or ALSO on cable (and OTA)?
