Playhouse Disney to be renamed Disney Junior

Astral has announced that, effective May 6th, Playhouse Disney will be rebranded Disney Junior.

While the name is changing, the station will continue to broadcast popular Disney programming and Canadian produced children’s programming.

In addition, Disney Junior will add a few new shows such as Jake and the Never Land Pirates and Special Agent Oso: Three Healthy Steps.

Gathering inspiration from Peter Pan, Jake and the Never Land Pirates is a new animated series featuring a crew of kid pirates trying to outwit the infamous Captain Hook and Mr. Smee. Also joining the schedule, Special Agent Oso: Three Healthy Steps, encourages healthy lifestyles for preschoolers.

“Featuring recognizable characters and a focus on learning, Disney Junior will hearken back to the magic of classic Disney and the characters and storytelling that we all love. The new brand and its programming strike the perfect balance between classic and contemporary to offer a unique viewing experience that families will delight in.” said Joe Tedesco, Senior Vice-President and General Manager, Family and Playhouse Disney.

Disney Junior is a multiplex channel from Family Channel therefore it is only available to Family Channel subscribers and cannot be ordered as a standalone channel.
