A recent report by the Nielsen company suggests the battle for market share among Smartphone operating systems is tight one.

The research queried almost fifteen thousand post-paid mobile subscribers in the United States between November of 2010 and January of 2011 and found that percentage of smartphone users using devices powered by the Android, Apple or Blackberry operating system was nearly identical.

When it comes to consumer market share by operating system, Nielsen said that Android at 29% market share is just slightly ahead of RIM Blackberry and Apple iOS whose each have a 27%. Microsoft's Mobile and Windows Phone 7 Operating systems had a 10% share. WebOS and Symbian had 4% and 2% share respectively.

An analysis by manufacturer shows RIM and Apple to be the winners compared to other device makers since they are the only ones creating and selling smartphones with their respective operating systems. HTC follows with 12 percent of consumer smartphone owners having an HTC Android device and 7 percent owning an HTC device running a Microsoft OS. Ten percent of consumer smartphone owners had a Motorola Android device and one percent owned a Motorola device running a Microsoft OS.
