Flames and Oilers sign 10-year deal with Sportsnet

Rogers Sportsnet have announced a 10-year deal with the NHL’s Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers that would see the broadcaster air at least 116 games per year on its various national and regional Sportsnet Channel.

Financial details of the deal were not announced.

Starting with the upcoming 2010-11 NHL season, Sportsnet will televise at least 58 Calgary Flames and 58 Edmonton Oilers games every year for 10 seasons within the Oilers and Flames regional territory which includes Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Beginning August 14th, the Rogers Sportsnet will consist of five channels including Sportsnet ONE and four regional channels Sportsnet East, Ontario, West, and Pacific.

With Oilers and Flames games now being broadcast on Sportsnet, TSN, or CBC, cable and satellite subscribers in the West will have the ability to watch virtually every regular season game on television provided they subscribe to the two specialty sports networks.

Allan Watt, a spokesperson for the Oilers said that all but one of the team’s 82 games during the upcoming season will be televised on one of the three channels.

NHL regional restrictions will apply which means that Sportsnet subscribers in B.C. and east of Manitoba will be blacked out. Schedule details for the upcoming season will be announced later this month.

I hate blackouts… Just because i live in NL the only games we tend to have broadcast are Toronto or Ottawa. The only way I get to see the Oilers is by coughing up $200 for Center Ice. Kinda sucks…

I agree, I live in BC and my team is the Flames, but I refuse tp pay for Center Ice so we steam it from the internet. They would be smarter just to have no black outs so more people would subscribe to Sportsnet.

No Oiler games in the pacific…only the dreaded canucks

Someone should tell the Oilers and Flames that we can’t get Sportsnet One in Alberta

  3. kelly says:

Hopefully they will not show games on sports net one or their will be alot of pissed off Oilers and Flames fans who will not subscribe to the rip off channel

This is why the NHL will never be a top tier league like NFL and NBA. Stream mass games to the people and your television audience will increase! It works for Nascar…im a flames fan in BC and still get caught up in regional BS restrictions…. this year – my extra dollars go to Sunday Ticket…..
