CRTC approves applications for four new HDTV channels

In four separate broadcasting decisions handed down last Friday by the CRTC, the federal regulator approved four applications for new national, English-language Category 2 specialty high definition television channels in Canada.

The new HD channels include “Velocity,” “Adventure,” “KISS,” and “The Love Channel”.

Applications for all four channels came from Jay Switzer, the former president of Chum TV. Although the applications have been approved by the federal regulator, there is no guaranteed the stations will actually make it to air. All four licences will expire August 31, 2016.

The following is a brief overview of each new station drawn from the respective CRTC decisions.

Velocity

In Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2010-449, the CRTC has approved an application from Mr. Switzer for a national, English-language Category 2 specialty station that would cover the entire genre of action and adventure, including selections from crime fiction, and epic and heroic drama.

Programming would consist of theatrical movies and series, mini-series, made-for-television movies and classic films primarily driven by a fast-paced fictional plot featuring car chases, explosions, special effects, or martial arts.

Adventure

In Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2010-450, the CRTC has approved an application for Northern Peaks, a national, English-language Category 2 pay television service that would cover the entire genre of action and adventure, including selections from crime fiction, and epic and heroic drama.

Programming would consist of contemporary action and adventure films and series, mini-series, made-for-television movies, classic films, and occasional magazine-style shows focusing on this genre and its stars.

The Commission received two interventions opposing this application; one from CTVglobemedia Inc. (CTVgm) and one from an individual. Both interventions were dismissed. For details see the decision.

KISS

In Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2010-451, the CRTC has approved an application for Northern Peaks, a national, English-language Category 2 pay television service that would be devoted to romance, love and relationships.

Programming would include series based on relationships, feature films, mini-series, made-for-television movies and occasional magazine-style shows focusing on this genre and its stars.

The Love Channel

In Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2010-452 , the CRTC has approved an application for Northern Peaks, a national, English-language Category 2 pay television service that would be devoted to romance, love and relationships.

Programming would feature talk shows about romance, series, feature films, mini-series and made-for-television movies. It would also feature occasional magazine programs focusing on this genre and its stars and examine the darker side of love.
