HBO Sport’s Magic & Bird premieres Sunday

In 1979, Los Angeles Lakers immortal “Magic” Johnson and Boston Celtics great Larry Bird led their Midwestern universities to the NCAA Championship game.

That game kicked off an on court rivalry and eventual friendship between two hoop legends who went on to dominate in the NBA, winning three MVP awards apiece and a combined eight NBA titles.

Chronicling the two athletes careers this Sunday is the Canadian premiere of HBO Sports Documentary “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals”.

Along with interviews with both Johnson and Bird, this 88 minute documentary features interviews with Hall of Famer Pat Riley, who coached Johnson on the great Lakers teams of the 1980s; fellow teammates and journalists which results in an interesting retrospective of the two players careers.

Basketball fans will know most of the story but should still enjoy the remarkable personal insights into its subjects.

“Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals” premieres Sunday, May 23 at 8 p.m. ET/MT on HBO Canada.
