Newcomers are often unsure of how to register, how to post, how to use private messaging and forum etiquette. Digital Home has developed this guide to help you get started in our discussion forums.

What is The Digital Forum?

The Digital Forum is a virtual meeting place where forum members can communicate and collaborate with others about topics of interest to them. Forums have also been described as public email or bulletin boards.The forums allow you to quickly post a question, opinion or thought and often get get replies within a matter of minutes. If you know how to send an email, you’ll quickly figure out how to post threads. The forum thread stays up so others can respond to your thread while your on-line or days after your post. Forum threads are searchable so you can actually search on previous discussions or questions.

What is a forum / thread / post?

Within the Digital forum there are over 75 different areas or forums for discussion. A forum is simply a special interest category. A thread is one discussion within that forum and a post is one reply within a thread. To use the email analogy, a forum is like a directory, a thread is an email and posts are a series of replies to the email.

Are the forums a chat-room?

No the forums are not chatrooms. Chatrooms are places where individuals can get online and exchange thoughts back and forth in real-time. The chatroom is like a verbal conversation but things are written instead of spoken.

Do I need to become a member of the forums to use them?

No, the bulk of people who visit Digital Home never register on the forums. Many visitors are simply lurkers. Lurkers are people who read postings and follow along with the conversations on the forums but don’t actually post comments or questions. Lurkers often find the answers to their questions without the need to register. It is not uncommon for long time lurkers to become members when they buy new equipment and suddenly have a unique question. Some new members tell us that they have “lurked” for a year or more before joining!

Why should I register?

The primary reason people register is to ask questions although many people register because they like to answer questions. Will you spam my email address?

No. The only email we send to new members is our activation email. To complete your registration, you are required to open this introductory email and confirm your membership. You will only receive additional email from us when you have ask for email notification on particular threads or forums.

If it’s free and you don’t spam me then who pays for the forums?

If I register, can people find out who I am and spam me or contact me?

No. When you register with the forums you create your own username and password. Other members do not know who you are or what your email address is unless you chose to tell them. You may communicate with others privately (and without divulging your email address) by using our private messaging system.

Can I turn off Private Messaging?

Yes. When you register, you can elect to turn private messaging on or off. Once you’re registered you may also turn it off or on by changing your user profile.

How do you prevent spam and rude behavior on the forums?

Digital Home Canada has more than 15 moderators and an administrator who crack down on any violation of the forum rules. We can’t guarantee that some spam and bad posts won’t make it to the forum but we make every effort to delete improper posts and depending on the severity or frequency of infractions, we simply ban offending members. In addition, every post on the forum has a quick link that allows members to report bad posts. The bad post report is then sent to moderators who quickly deal with offending posts – often within minutes.
