3DTV sales expected to disappoint

While manufacturers and movie studios have been desperately trying to sell 3DTVs and 3D movies this year, it appears that high prices and lack of content have kept consumers from opening their wallets.

A recent report by DisplaySearch predicts that just 3.2 million 3DTVs will be shipped in 2010. The firm predicts about half those 3D sets will be sold in North America.

3DTV sales expected to reach 2.5 million units in 2010

Worldwide sales of 3D capable televisions is expected to reach 2.5 million in 2010 and 27 million in 2013 according to a recent report from DisplaySearch.

While the number of 3D televisions expected to be sold is significant, it still represents just 1.1% of the estimated 228 million televisions that the research firm expects will be sold.

Over 211 million televisions sold in 2009

Global television sales were up 2% in 2009 to 211 million units according to the latest figures from DisplaySearch. Flat panel TV technologies like LCD enjoyed even better growth with sales up 34% from 2008.
