After six months of increases, global sales of personal computers totalled 92.2 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, a 1.4 decline increase from the same period last year according to a recent report from Gartner.
The research firm says weakening demand for computers among consumers, caused by economic uncertainty, was the primary reason for the decline.
Worldwide shipments of tablet computers totalled 72.7 million units in 2011, approximately 25.5% of all mobile PC shipments, according to a recent report from Displaysearch.
The researchers estimate tablet shipments in 2011 will finish 256% than in 2010.
Worldwide sales of Smartphones totalled 115 million units in the third quarter of 2011, up 42 percent from the same quarter of 2010 and up 7% form the second quarter of 2011 according to a recent report from Gartner.
The research firm says smartphone sales accounted for 26 percent of all mobile phone sales, growing only marginally from 25 percent in the previous quarter.
Global sales of personal computers reached 91.8 million units in the third quarter of 2011, a 3.2 percent increase from the same period last year according to a recent report from Gartner.
While the numbers were up over 2010, they were below Gartner’s earlier projection for 5.1 percent growth. Gartner sales figures include desk-based PCs, mobile PCs, including mini-notebooks but not media tablets such as the iPad.
Worldwide sales of televisions are not expected to grow from 2010 to 2011, holding at 248 million units according to a recent report from Display Search. Previously the company had been predicting growth of around 4 percent for the year.
Although the predicted number of sales 2011 is expected to be flat, shipments of flat panel TVs, which excludes CRT and rear projection technologies, will increase about 6% for the year.
Worldwide Sales of personal computers are expected reach 364 million units in 2011, up 3.8 percent from 2010 according to an updated forecast from the Gartner research firm. While the numbers are expected to be positive for the year, the estimates are much weaker than originally predicted.
Global television shipments were 55.5 million units in the second quarter of 2011, down 1 percent from 56.2 million units in the same quarter a year earlier, according to recent report from DisplaySearch.
The decline was not a big surprise to analysts since the second quarter of 2010 was very strong due an increase in demand last year prior to the World Cup Soccer Tournament.
Apple surpassed HP in worldwide sales of mobile computers in the second quarter of 2011 according to a recent report by Displaysearch.
The research company is reporting that shipments of Apple mobile computers surpassed 13.5 million units in the April to June timeframe, an increase of 136% over the same period of 2010.
