Chrome web browser steals share from IE and Firefox

The Google Chrome web browser gained 0.6% of global market share in January from the previous month according to figures published today by NetMarketshare.

Total worldwide usage for Chrome was 5.2% in January, more than triple the 1.5% recorded in January 2009.

Firefox still gaining after five years

Firefox, the free and open source web browser from the Mozilla Corporation, turned five years old this week.

The browser, which is now available for download in more than seventy languages, is now the world’s second most popular browser in the world after Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

Use of Internet Explorer continues to decline

According to Net Applications’ browser usage share statistics for October 2009, the number of people using Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) continues to fall.

Net Applications reports that worldwide, IE remained the number one browser in terms of usage in October at 64.6% but that was down significantly from 73.6% in October 2008.
