Pavilion dv7 won't output Blu-Ray through HDMI - Canadian TV, Computing and Home Theatre Forums

I have an HP Pavilion dv7 Entertainment laptop with a Blu-Ray ROM and HDMI out. I thought I would be able to play a disc in the drive and output it to my Home Theater. No luck. I tried going through the receiver and direct to the TV but as soon as I plug it the cable the playback on the laptop screen stops and tells me that it is an unauthorized playback mode. Copy protection? Any way to get around this? I'm waiting for Oppo to bring out their Blu-Ray player so I was hoping to use the laptop to watch the occasional disc on my system.

What does the manual say about playback of BluRay over the HDMI port?

If both the laptop and display are HDCP compliant it should work unless they have explicitly crippled that playback mode.

Manual? We don't need no stinking manual.

Seriously though, no manual came with the laptop. Does anything come with a manual anymore? What's HDCP?

The manual might have come on a CD.

HDCP is the encryption protocol that is used for HDMI interfaces. Some playback devices require it to be present for HD playback.

Plug in the the HDMI cable, connect it to the TV.
Go to Display Properties and set-up both screens. Remember you can only display on one screen at a time. Use the Function F4 to switch between displays.
I have a similar PC, HP DV5 with a BluRay player and was getting the same message as above when I tried to play a BluRay DVD on both the displays at the same time.
I learnt that you cannot play BD on two displays at the same time, it is apparantely 'forbidden'. That in itself is a joke : HDCP.
So all I did was to set up the display to "Extend my Windows desktop unto this monitor' (HDTV was display 2). Get to Display Settings by right clicking on an empty space on the Desktop and go to the Settings Tab.
I can then use Fn F4 on the HP laptop or drag the 'minimised BD movie window' to the HDTV display. You can then maximise the BD player (QuikPlay) window.
