Default Yamaha HTR-6140 & PS3

Will the combination of the HTR-6140 Yamaha receiver and the PS3 provide me with all of the new sound formats (Dolby True HD, DTS-MA)?

Here is a description of the receiver from Future Shop:

This high performance Yamaha Home Theatre Receiver offers many advanced functions including 1080p/24fps HDMI video switching, HDMI audio support, high quality Burr Brown DA Converters, YPAO sound optimization for the best possible performance as well as XM and Sirius compatibility.

Yes, as the 6140 can accept LPCM over HDMI.

The PS3 will do the decoding send it to the 6140.

Be aware, there are reports of the 6140 making the video signal 'darker'. Apparently the 6160 and up does not have this issue. The 6140 is very good value IMHO at the current price. (sorry admin!)

By the way, this is the exact same unit as the RX-V463. See further down this page for the review.

Thank you for your response. I have had two sales people one at Future Shop and another at Fairview Hi-Fi in Burlington tell me that I would need a receiver with these sound formats in order for it to work with the PS3.

Yes, I did see the review of the RX-V463 but where in the Burlington area is it available. Future Shop and Best Buy don't seem to carry it. Does it have the "darker" video problem?

Futureshop and BB don't carry it because they get the 'HTR' version.

The HTR-6140 and the RX-V463 are identical in all but name.

Yamaha (and Denon) have done this for years. HTR versions go to 'big box' stores and the RX series goes to the small boutiques and hifi stores.

It does (potentially) have the dark video problem as it is the exact same unit.

Just curious, but since the PS3 does the decoding, does that mean just about any receiver with an HDMI input will work? The receiver would just need to be able to output video to the tv.

Not all AVRs handle HDMI audio, but ones that do will work with the PS3. Some AVRs and HTIBs simply switch/pass HDMI video and pass the audio to the TV, not processing the audio internally.

Wow - glad I checked the thread. Was looking at upgrading to a better reciever to handle gaming and blu-ray from my PS# and was initially looking at the Pioneer 1018TXH True HD, DTS MA HDMI 1.3 receiver - but if this Yamaha can provide the same sound (or at least decode the True HD/DTS HD signal) at half the price, that would be great. I only have the option of 5.1 at this point and w/ a kid on the way, won't be going overboard on new speakers any time soon - but is the pioneer that much of a step up that it would be worth the extra money? - FYI - my projector has only component/vga input so I don't suffer the darkening efffect as I'll prob run the signal direct from the PS3 if it's a prob - reciever will strictly be used for audio

Clarification, it's the PS3 that does the decoding.

if money is an issue then buy the sony 720 or the pioneer 918 or the yammy 6140. you could be SOL for HD audio in the future if you use a different player then the ps3 tho. theres other additional features on the 1018 to consider as well.

If you want to run video straight from your PS3 to your projector it sounds like you'd want to run a component cable. If you do that, you can't output audio via HDMI. You would have to use an optical cable, in which case the PS3 will only output basic Dolby Digital or DTS. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

If you do care about fancy things like Dolby True HD, you need to use the HDMI from the PS3 to your receiver. But then I don't know if any receiver would take in an HDMI video signal and convert it to component for you to send to your projector.

I'm fairly sure that you can run component for the video and HDMI for the audio. I haven't seen the 463 (I have the 663), but in the setup menu for the receiver, you should be able to specify the video and corresponding audio inputs.

I also have the 663. On page 19 it says, "Digital video signals input at one of the HDMI IN jacks cannot be output from analog video output jacks". It even shows the little picture.

I'm trying to load up the Owner's Manual for the HTR 6140, but the yamaha.ca site is so slow for me right now. Someone else can check.

I believe there are only one or two premium AVRs that "downconvert" HDMI to CV. I believe it may be Sherwood or something similar, probably due to the European origin.

Would he not be able to hook up component from the PS3 to the projector, and then an HDMI from the PS3 to the 463? Then specify in the ps3 menu to use HDMI for the audio? As well, in the 463 menu, you can specify the component in for video, and match it to the HDMI input for audio?
