Go with whatever your friends have so that you can swap/share games.

Xbox is a better system hands down(hardware, performence) but PS2 is more popular and has many more games. I would prolly but a PS2

Number of Games: PS2
Variety of Games: PS2 Quality of Graphics and performance: XBOX I think of Gamecube and the games designed for them as for younger kids, PS2 for teens and XBOX skews adult. I think you look at what type of games you like and then pick the console. the reality is long term the games cost a lot more than the hardware!

Also consider which system offers the exclusive franchise games that you like best (Halo, GTA, Grand Tourismo, etc...).

I was a little unsure about which to get when I first got my Xbox, but I am SOOOOOO happy I got an Xbox. There has only been two games that have come out for PS2 that I've wished I could play on Xbox (now that GTA:VC is out for Xbox) and those were Pride Fighting Championship and the Socom series. Other than that, every good game for PS2 is on Xbox.
Xbox has WAY better graphics, HD support, and sound than PS2. Xbox online play is better than PS2, and you can mod your Xbox to do anything from stream music from a PC to your home theatre, to running Linux (which seems pointless to me.) The modding is a point that really can't be ignored. You can run emulators of your favorite consoles on Xbox, so you can play NES games, SNES games, Sega Genesis games, Atari games, etc. on it. You can install software like Xbox Media Player and Xbox Media Center which allow you to play all the types of media you would normally play on a PC, on your Xbox, and on your home theatre. You can also stream MP3s from your PC to your Xbox to play on your home theatre using simple windows file sharing with XBMC. The exclusive titles from Xbox are also a plus too ... Halo, Project Gotham Racing, Halo 2 (when it comes out), Mech Assult, Top Spin Tennis, NHL Rivals, Amped 2 etc. Xbox, in my opinion, is by FAR a superior console that you can do a lot more with than you can do with a PS2. |

Maybe a bit late, but if you're into multiplayer gaming. X-Box Live is a superb service. Most multiplayer X-Box games now have integrated voice which makes a big difference to the gameplay.
