Default Advice on upgrade

Hi everyone, my first post

Read all of this thread and decide to upgrade my SA8300HD.
WD10EADS
IDE2SAT25
Clone disk with iMac and 2 USB to SATA/IDE using Active disk image
(BootCamp WinXP)

All my recording are working on the new disk
Tried a new recording, works fine.

Now my problem.
Recorded two shows a the same time
Watching the first show, while it is still recording (occasional audio drop and some video Pixelization).

The second recording aborted before the end (3 hours recording aborted after approx. 2 hours)

It seems that the hard drive can not cope with amount of data.

Any advice, suggestions would be very welcome.

Check your Signal Strength and S/N Ratio. Borderline signal can cause problems when trying to do two or three things:

I'm a little bit late... but my HDD is a WD10EADS... I was supposed to have a C (16MB cache), but it's a D (32MB cache).

and yes, I configured the jumber for Sata 1.5Gb/s...

I still get the Er.53 error and coutdown after every reboot... but it's working fine everytime after that...

An update:
I've been having troubles with my setup. Its "stuttering" on recording/playback.
It would do it 3 or 4 times in a 30 minute HD show. SD was not affected.

I've changed the SATA cable and reseat the IDE2SAT25 card and also removed the drive jumper (Western Digital WD10EADS) altogether.

What is the purpose of jumpering the drive down in speed?

Default WD10EAVS and JM20330

Well, I took the plunge to upgrade my 8300HD with the following:

Adapter: SATA to 3.5"IDE(PATA) motherboard adapter (JM20330)

Hard drive: WD10EAVS WD Caviar Green 3.5" 1TB 5400-7200RPM 8MB SATAII

Initially, it booted up but then locked up when I pressed the List button. After unplugging and restarting it was stuck in a loop
frla
err 53
etc..

After about 5 cycles, I shut it off and restarted and it booted up fine. Running fine since one hour, tried HD recording on two channels while I watched another HD recording and live on one of the channels being recorded.

I bought the HD locally last week and the adapter on ebay for about $5.50, shipping included. Total cost of upgrade, around 90 bucks, though the drive was on sale, it's gone up in price since.

It's a Green drive, so I am keeping my fingers crossed it won't show any of the issues previously mentioned in this thread. I am amazed how quiet it is though. This model only has 8mb cache, I don't think that would be an issue for this application.

The IDE2SAT25 is SATA 1.0 compliant, not SATA II.

Also make sure the power to the IDE2SAT25 is secure and the adapter is seated completely (you have to remove the retention clips). If that drive can be jumpered to 1.5Gbps speeds do it. If not then it is likely it only supports auto-negotiation and may not work. FYI, my PC motherboard will not recognize NCQ SATA drives either.
Jake, tried your suggestion and jumpered the SV35 to 1.5gbps and it works!

Did some quick tests and recorded 2 SD programs and played back a 3rd without any issues detected.

Thanks!

Good to hear. Just keep an eye on your recordings. IIRC some people are noticing glitches after about 20 hours of recordings with the Seagates.

I am not able to upload photos, but here is a link of the adapter I used to upgrade to a 1TB WD drive as describes in my post above:

Excuse the quality, just used my Blackberry to take the photos.

Thanks lonetreejim.

Looks like the jumper needs to go back on. I just tried to record a show for the kids and got unrecoverable disk error on the tv.

I've traced my 'stuttering' issue to a faulty PATA 2 SATA power connector I bought on Ebay for $1. It has a loose wire connection inside it.

I had to take the WD 1TB drive out and power it up from my computers power supply to verify it worked. Once I added the PATA 2 SATA power cable on the computer the drive failed to power up. Looks like I'm off to The Source By Circuit City tomorrow for a replacement.

I even did a forced HDD Format of the 1TB drive after I got it somewhat working in the 8300HD again.

I jumpered pins 5/6 again. Without it, it will record for exactly 3 minutes than fail.

1.5 TB working just fine so far. 72 HD programs recorded, 25% used.

So far so good.
All is working and the whole drive is being used!
