I read in another forum that Yamaha runs really hot?. How does the Yamaha sound to Pioneer, Denon, Onkyo and Harmon Hardon which is the only one I've heard in movie, music, games and TV and LOVED it! sounded amazing but my problem is I live in a small town we don't have a FS or BB so every place that sells them only has one company and none of them are set up to TVs so it makes it REALLY hard to compare.

My Yamaha HTR 6160 never gets "hot".

It's a good HT reciever. I have no desire to replace it for HT.

And you've read in this forum that it doesn't run hot.

You should worry more about how the speakers sound than how the receiver "sounds". That being said, you seem smitten with the HK, so my sincere advice is: Buy it.

I belive it is the Onkyo recievers that get really hot.Ive heard that from a lot of owners.
I own a RX-v3800 Yamaha and i was rocking it last night. After a couple of hours i wanted to see how hot it got.It was normally warm.I totally belive if you don't give any reciever room to breath it will get hot in time.

HK were have serious problems with there recievers a couple of years back.I lost trust in that company. But thats my personal opinion on that.

I can tell you just because i own a yamaha that its a truly an exceptional reciever. music and movies are to die for Brother.

Every time i start up my system i get a warm and exciting feeling. The sound is that good
What ever reciever you go with i hope you get that same feeling

Good luck to you

Default avoid harman

my first experience with harman kardon was a flagship model receiver that arrived without the front panel working. after a month dispute of who was to be responsible for the unit (the retail store or the manufacturer) the replacement unit arrived. Over the course of the next year the remote ceased to function properly (and harman stopped supporting the tc-30 remote), the multi-room never functioned properly and the unit would constantly freeze upon startup (only resetting the power to my entire system would remedy the problem). I contacted harman in early may, they had replied quickly saying they were releasing an update in 2 to 3 weeks. The update never came (its now november) and all further queries have been ignored by their customer service.
Last week I sold the unit at 1/4 of the cost I paid new for it.
I replaced with a yamaha 1800 that sounds better, was easier to set up and cost 1/2 of what the original harman receiver cost.

Yeah,i knew it was a flagship model they were having problems with. do you remember the model#.
I do know the reciever was pricey and i was very surprised that a lot of people were having the same problems.
Before that i use to think HK was totally high end quailty. But not any more.
I would be scared To grab one,But thats just me

I have owned 4 HK Receivers over the years and currently own a 354, I have never had anything but great experiences with the HK.

The thread regarding issues with the HK 254 and 354 is enormous over at AVS.

It seems most of have been fixed with a recent firmware update, although clearly these models should never have been released with so many problems.

Personally, I don't get all the fuss over HK. They are supposed to be amazing in 2 channel stereo but I just don't hear it over say Yamaha and Denon. If anything they sound a little too 'muddy' for my tastes. Still everyone hears things differently....it's the beauty of audio gear!
Now if it was an Arcam that would be a different story................

I have a 2 y/o HK-245 (no HDMI audio) which always performed flawlessly, PS3 included. This is not to say others are just complainers: it is to state that not all Harman Kardon's production is full of bugs.

I think it's about if you want to take a chance the HK,I have a Samsung BD-p1400 and it's worked flawless but if you read around there's alot of problems.

I got lucky. But personally i wouldn't take that chance again.
Do you see the point i am trying to get at.
Remember boy's this is just MY personal opinion

If presented with the choice between Yamaha or Harmon Kardon I think I would go for Yamaha. However, both of them are not my favourite brands
