Question Toshiba 42" Flat-Panel LCD 42AV500U findings

Hi,
I recently posted an inquiry about the Toshiba 42" Flat-Panel LCD 42AV500U. I as looking for user opinions.
Anyway, I could find very few opinions, but all were favorable. So I purchased this model, and after a day or two of use, I find their seems to be a green hue or shadow on the picture lines. Like the outline of say a person on the screen would have a hint of a green line.
Is this related to the "green push" I've read so much about?
Other than that, the picture is clear, crisp and bright.
Thanks,
bill

Have you optimized the settings on the TV? See the following post on that topic:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=76161

What devices do you have connected to the TV. Is the issue the same on all devices, all channels?

Please put your location and service provider into your UserCP Profile (location). This often helps us help you.

Thanks for the response!
I'm using digital cable from Eastlink. Not HD.

I'm plugged in with HDMI. The green problem is very pronounced while watching Standard Cable. While watching The Matrix Reloaded DVD, the whole picture seems to have a green overtone, even after I go -5 on the tint.
I haven't used any calibration software, but my LCD shouldn't be off that much!

Thanks,
bill

The Matrix series is green. You may wish to read the following:

Which contains the following:

So, yes, your TV can be off by "that much". I'm confused though. You say you're using an HDMI connection but don't have HD - doesn't make much sense since only HD STBs have that connection, or were you referring to the DVD Player?

Yes,
HDMI cable is connecting Cablebox to TV (I dont have HD channels however). Component cables for DVD-TV.
I'll keep messing with it!

Thanks,
bill

What is the make/model of the STB? Are you saying that even with the most basic service that Eastlink doesn't provide some HD and that you have to purchase that extra. Even if you do, wouldn't it be worth it with an HDTV?

It's a Motorola DCT-6412. As far as I know, I don't have any HD channels, and I didn't subscribe for them. Interested in the recording capabilities. That's why I have that box. I like to watch a DVD movie occasionally and it's gotta' have a knockout picture and audio!

Seems that the green is more prominent in various cable channels.
DVD' seem to look fine. Guess I can live with that!

Default Things to Try with the Toshiba

If you are not happy with the set return it that would solve your problem. Many of the HD sets do not do a good job with non digital pictures. I know nothing about eastlink but you may wish to check that you are getting a digital picture through your cable box. Most cable boxes now are digital.

One thing you could try is put the picture into black and white there should be no colour what so ever. If there is a colour of some sort then it needs to be calibrated by a Toshiba serviceman. If the gray scale is not right then the colours will be out.

Check you manual that set may have an automatic tint control you may want to try it on or off.

That particular set did not get good reviews by CNET but that did not stop me from buying one for my son. I have an higher end toshiba 42 and it is a great set.

One thing you may want to try is disconnecting the other cables and just run on HDMI.

I know on some rogers box and a Sony TV you can not run both it causes problems you may want to check the Toshiba manual on that point.

If you have tried several things and you are not happy with the performance then return the set or call a serviceman there is a 1 year in home warranty with the set.

One last tip if you do not have high definition you only have 1/2 of the cow. HD is 6 times the picture quality of normal TV.

eyespy Based on post 5, you are using two different inputs on the TV. It should be possible to calibrate each input on the TV separately, using one of the picture modes. Most new HDTVs will remember the settings for each input.

You could then try changing the tint (go towards the red and away from the green) on the STB connection while not affecting the DVD connection. This is discussed in the link in post 2.

As mentioned above, if your greyscale is shot, then that won't work, but since the one connection seems "OK", then that may not be your issue.

jft436,
I turned off color, and it was b/w. No color at all!!
Their is no Auto Tint on this unit I could find. Disconnecting Component cables from DVD player made no difference in picture quality while watching non-HD Cable programs. I have to add, however, that some Cable channels seem to display the green hue more than others!
I just switched from a RPTV to an LCD, and maybe RPTV wouldn't show this problem a clearly?

Thanks,
bill

Ok,
just finished watching Ironman on DVD. Their are still hints of green in the shadows and in the flesh colored areas.
Now is their a tweak in the Service Menu to fix this? I've already tweaked the user settings for both HDMI and Component inputs. If their is a specific tweak in the Service Menu, could someone tell me how to get to it, and approximately what adjustment (s) should or could be made? I would rather go this route first before returning the TV.

Thanks,
bill
