hey mango
do you think there is any issues with running a dlink router and a linksys ATA? There are other dlink ATA 's out there. Would it be better to keep it in the family? thanks |

I've been using a D-Link DIR825 with Linksys equipment and no problem except I find D-Link has a low-powered antenna when you compare it to the Linksys WRT-610N. However you most likely will plug your ATA directly into your router. It won't be wireless so it won't matter at all.

I'm late to the party, but I agree with the above two posters
There are some routers that don't work well with VoIP, but I've never seen an issue caused by brand incompatibility. m.

you guys have been really helpful. it looks like im going to go with the LINKSYS VOIP Phone Adapter SPA2102. I'm going to go hunting for one this weekend.
Do any of you have a phone recommendation? I want to use the features that VOIP offers. I was hoping to get a cordless phone so i can walk around the house. Are there any brands or model numbers, that will embrace the SPA2102 and the voip enhanced features? thanks for your time O |

I have a cordless phone attached to my SPA9000 that works really well. It's a Panasonic DECT phone. The DECT phones have a longer range than the 2.4 or 5.8 Ghz phones. They transmit on the 1.9 Ghz frequency. The lower the frequency, the longer the range. Panasonic seems to make excellent cordless phones, and they support call display, voicemail message waiting indicator, and visual call waiting.

Seriously considering going to voip.ms,, found a smoking deal on a Linksys SPA2102-NA to use with the service. Now I'm currently with Vonage, I'm wondering if I should transfer my DID or get a new one. If I transfer, do I need to wait until voip.ms has my number before being able to make\receive calls?? Or do they assign a temp number or maybe alow outgoing until the transfer is complete??

Porting a number can take a few weeks or longer... Just register and get a number of your choice. You pay 50 cents to set it up plus the regular monthly fee (1.49 or 1.99 depending on location). When you get your normal number ported, you will now have 2 DID, you can keep both or cancel the original one. All you loose is the $0.50 you spent to get the orginal DID.

Or you can just sign up to voip.ms for outgoing only calls and not bother ordering a new DID. Put through an order to port your Vonage DID and once it's done you'll have your number and be fully removed from Vonage.
There is a fee to port your number at voip.ms. |

So if I register for a new DID how long does it take for the number to be active so I can input it in my ATA?

The last time I registered a number it was immediate. However you don't need a DID unless you want to receive calls from your voip.ms service. They give you an account number. It's the account number you use when registering your ATA. Not the phone number. That allows you to make outgoing calls. Once you get your number ported, then you attach the DID to your main account through the voip.ms web and you don't need to do anything more to your ATA. Even once your number is ported your ATA will use your account number or sub-account number to register.

Ok I follow,, alright so since I already created a account I'm good to go. I guess my only decision is whether I get a new number or transfer. But for $0.50 and set my vonage to forward in the mean time.. there would be need to tell everyone I have a new number...

Right, you would need to tell everyone you have a new number.
The .50 cent plan that was mentioned charges you for each minute you talk on an incoming call! If you want to receive unlimited incoming calls, you'll pay an extra $4.95 to $5.95 depending on where you live per month for the number. You may as well just use your Vonage line for now, and only use voip.ms for outgoing calls. When your Vonage number is ported and you cancel your new number - Voip.ms won't give you a refund for the days/weeks you already paid for. So unless you want to give people your new number and pay fees for the incoming calls, you may as well wait until your number is ported and only use voip.ms for outgoing calls. That is my suggestion. You are not being charged by the minute for incoming calls from Vonage. |

yes I realize your charged by the minute. But the difference in cost of 1.99 vs 5.95 I would need to receive a minimum of 265 min per month, which I know I dont do, and for either plan your paying by the minute for outgoing which at the moment its usally under 500min a month which is about $3, so I'm potentially looking at paying under $10 a month for phone service. My vonage service is fine, I have unlimited province + 500 can\usa for 35\month but saving $25 a month over 12 month is $300, worth it in my opinion. Just hope voip.ms lives up to its name and has a solid voip quality. not saying vonage is perfect but its been pretty solid for the last couple years, was a different story in the begining.
