FABRICE TAYLOR
Globe and Mail September 10, 2008 at 6:00 AM EDT It's hard to understate the merciless beating telephone companies are taking at the hands of the cable firms. Yet investors don't seem particularly keen on cable. The stocks are doing okay, but given the underlying growth rate and the defensive nature of cable, you'd be forgiven for assuming they'd be doing better. Maybe they will. Very interesting article. It an up to date chronicle of the Telco vs. Cableco battle for the hearts and minds of consumers. |

Thanks, man. Interesting material....
Just from my own experience and those of a few friends, I think the high-speed solution from the cable boys has the aDSL offerings from Bell or Telus beat to hell. When they throw in voice and TV, it's a very attractive package to the consumer. |

I think the Telco's have purposely put their money into wireless and avoided funding competitive technology in the landline and broadbrand (internet and tv) arenas. They've also been hampered by CRTC rules that have allowed other non telco companies to offer services at lower rates. But as the article says, the cable technology is eating their lunch at the moment. I was also surprised by the comment that the real segment to be hammered in the future is the satellite companies. "The big gains in telco video – net additions were up 69 per cent in the second quarter – is coming mainly out of the hide of the satellite broadcasters, who are in serious trouble."
