Using Receiver At Parents' Cottage

Hello Everyone,

My Son is going to my parents cottage for the week. They have an expressvu satellite dish installed at the cottage but they currently do not have service. He is only 2 years old so having some tv time will give my parents a "break".

At home I have an extra 3100 receiver that I can activate. At both locations the receivers will not be connected to the phone line (my house and cottage).

So my question is, is it possible to activate my 3100 receiver at my house, disconnect it, give it to my dad and him bring it to the cottage, plug it in there and he will have satellite?

If so, is there anything I should be aware of so that BEV doesn't catch on and zap his receiver etc? Should he leave the receiver at the cottage on at all times? Do I need to block bell from running auto software updates?

You help is greatly appreciated.

Technically, there is no problem in doing what you are suggesting. As per Bell's rules, you are likely violating them. Can they catch you? Probably not. You certainly won't be the only one who does this sort of thing.

Although we often discuss having receivers at home and at your own cottage, only one set of which should be "used" at a time, I believe what is being discussed in this thread is illegal. If this is only for one week, that's one thing, but if it continues, then it's signal theft since the account is being split with two locations active at the same time.

You may wish to re-read the OP. The same person is not paying and watching. A receiver paid for by a "person" cannot be used (legally) by "his/her father", at another location (parents' cottage).

It would be similar to "lending" a receiver to a friend to use at his house, while you use other receivers at your home. Sure, it can probably be justified for a week, however, long term, it's account splitting.

Note that this situation is different from one we have discussed before where you have your own cottage and are only in one location at one time, which most people agree is "OK", even though it also breaks BEV's rules (but not *C).

My guess is as long is there is some kind of service your receiver should work fine.

I go to cabin that has service but has the basic programming.I take my receiver that has all programming and has worked fine every time.

I've taken my receiver to a friends house that had no service and it didn't work.

There's something wrong with your friend's dish or connections then. It's the receiver that is programmed for the service and channels it receives. There is no relation to the address and the receiver.

The receiver contains the programming information,, well the smart card,, which is marries to the receiver. I can take my receiver and bring it anywhere in this country, so long a dish is pointed to 91\82 and it will work just like it did at home.

That's exactly my situation,I have Bell at home and want to add a receiver to take up north to be used occasionally for a week at a time. My question is can I activate the new receiver up north or should I activate it at home first? Thanks

I would activate it at home (as if you call a CSR to get it done they may ask you the location ID's of all your recievers). Being at home and able to offer up that information will prevent and suspicion on Bell's part.
