Default Syndicated Reruns in HD

Last night, I noticed "2 and a Half Men" airing in HD on FOX HD West out of Seattle. This is the first time I've seen a show air in reruns in HD. I tried to find more, but couldn't. I know FOX Buffalo HD airs the same show in reruns, but it isn't in HD.
Are there other stations and shows out there that are in syndication and are airing in HD? Obviously the list would be limited because not many shows shot in HD are in syndication yet.

Actually, Fox 29 in Buffalo has run many rerun episodes of 'Two And A Half Men' in HD over the last two months. In fact, there's currently one airing as I type this at 10:30 pm Tuesday night.

One of the Omni 1 channels in Toronto has been running 'Everybody Loves Raymond' episodes in HD over the past year as well ( although I don't think every season was shot in HD. ) I seem to recall a few 'King of Queens' episodes in HD as well on that station, but I never actually watch the show.

Aren't all reruns of shows produced in HD aired in HD?

Network shows that were HD are repeated in HD. Shows in syndication and in HD can only be shown by stations with HD broadcasting capabilities.

Since the rights to programmes are sold as SD or HD or both, some networks/affiliates may decide to "cheap out" and not purchase the HD rights for a particular programme, so that's why sometimes you don't see an HD programme, where it aired in HD originally.

I was referring to shows in syndication, not repeats of same season network shows during a particular week.
But I do think as more and more shows in HD go into syndication, and more and more affiliates do local news in HD, more shows will appear in HD in syndication. Hopefully the cost does come down for stations to show syndicated shows in HD.

So far the only sitcom I know that is syndicated in HD is Two and a Half Men.

Omni.1 and Omni.2 have some syndicated shows in HD not found in syndication anywhere else and they include King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond.

Early seasons of 2.5 men were shot in SD and later seasons were HD. So it depends on the particular episode. There's 5 seasons (starting in September 2003) in total.

In the past most sitcoms were shot using 35mm film which surpasses the quality of even totally uncompressed 1.49 Gigabits per sec 10-bit 4:4:4 HD video. Broadcast HD is only 19Mbps 8-bit 4:2:0.

Due to cost saving of using HD over 35mm film, many sit-coms have switched to HD.

Year 2004
Quote:
It costs about $70 per minute per camera to shoot 35mm film when you factor in the cost of film stock, lab processing, film-to-tape transfer and color correction. Since situation comedies shoot with four to five cameras to capture a live, spontaneous feel, the cost for shooting film is substantial. Whereas, if the show shoots in HD, the cost is only about $2 per minute per camera, resulting in significant savings on below-the-line costs."
As for the show "TWO & A HALF MAN", for the 2005 season they still used 35mm film which surpasses even the best HD quality .

Year 2004
Quote:
"In terms of trends, four-camera comedies almost exclusively shoot in HD, with very few exceptions. And single-camera shows almost exclusively shoot film, with only a couple of exceptions," reports Bario. One exception is the Charlie Sheen comedy Two and a Half Men (for CBS), which Bario says prefers to shoot film for creative reasons."

The older sitcoms may not be syndicated in HD due to the fact that the old masters are SD masters, probably on DigiBeta format. It is very expensive to take the older sitcoms such as friends, cheers or any of the numerous sitcoms shot on 35mm film and remaster them on a format like SR-HDCAM. But rest asurred when it becomes feasible – it will be done and it may be sooner rather than later.

I refuse to watch any show that was produced in HD but aired in SD. That goes for syndicated shows as well. When broadcasters start realizing they are losing viewers and $, things will change.

The thing is, HD and SD varies depending on channel.

For example, Rochester's Fox WUHF had the 2 & Half Men on SD.
The exact same episodes on Seattle's Fox channel had it in HD.

This means, as 57 said, channels cheap out and show the SD programme even if the same episodes are available in HD.

All seasons of Two and a Half Men are availabel in HD. I have been watching that show since Day 1.

It's possible that they were shot on film the first few seasons but they made an HD transfer of all the episodes.

Also FOX HD Seattle and WGN HD Chicago both show ALL episodes of Two and a Half Men in HD. I just watched the pilot episode a few weeks ago and rest assured it was HD.

I know City tv HD isn't on the list of channels we're allowed to discuss here,
however does anyone know why City HD stopped airing Stargate:Atlantis in HD?

Americans get SEINFELD in HD:

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/03...-hd-on-tbs-hd/

What they've done is a combination of opening up the sides of the frame, as well as a bit of cropping, likely to compensate for what couldn't be revealed when opening the frame up. All the titles were re-done to fit the frame and apparently looks quite good, as it's not upconverted.

I'm a little jealous.
