It is sad, but the DVI-HDMI cables work on the Sony units from Dish and Bell DVI boxes 100% of the time.
It really is a Motorola problem, not a Sony one. |

That's not true. The SA-Sony connection is also known to be flaky on occasion (DVI and HDMI). There are a number of threads on this forum on that topic. I believe the BEV units work because there's no HDCP active there. Here's a (lengthy) summary of HDMI issues:

Your reference is not really relevant and there are so many varied issues in those threads and really little on direct connections between the mfgs being discussed in this particular thread. It pertains to AVRs and other devices inbetween the original source and the specific output device. In these cases there are many, many areas where there are DVI to HDMI incompatabilities. In this thread it was strictly discussing direct source DVI to output device HDMI. In this area there are a fantastic number of references, the majority INCLUDING SHAW, indicates that the DIRECT SOURCE DVI to output HDMI works with TVs with the exception of the Motorola source DVI to Sony TV HDMI. When the Motorola implementation of HDCP is added to the mix, the problem grows exponentially. With the Motorola to Sony situation you will get HDCP errors on non-HDCP channels, regardless of what the flag is set at from the broadcaster's side. The HDCP issue becomes muddied when there is a third item in between, whether it is passthrough or switching. Even Sony has Tech Notes on this issue and it is well known in the support industry and is very specific to Motorola DVI output units. Just my $0.02 worth of comments... |

Clarification: I was discussing direct connections. There are even problems with HDMI to HDMI on many Sonys - XBR4s and SXRDs that I've set up that have required workarounds. Here are but two examples:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=87101 http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/show...210#post605210 There are others - mostly Sony XBR4 or SXRDs, but I won't bother searching for them for the purpose of this discussion. I have a Sony W3000 that works fine with DVI on my SA3250HD. I've done hundreds of setups over the years and the direct connection to the TV typically does work fine, however, if there is an issue it is often a Sony TV (SXRD or XBR4) or it's a Pace STB, which has a huge number of issues via HDMI. The list of problems in the HDMI FAQ referenced earlier are based on my experience in setting these up, or based on feedback in the forum. This is all about direct connections. When going through an AVR, or a switch, as you say, the problems increase. We can differ of course.

Just to update everyone -Shaw gave me a visit and replaced my Motorola with a Pace unit and all seems fine now.

Again, to go directly to the heart of the original question, it was a direct Sony - Motorola connection via HDMI to DVI. Your discussion of HDMI to HDMI and the Pace to Sony is really not relevant.
If you have access to either Shaw's or Sony's technical bulletins you will be able to see the correlation of Motorola set top boxes with DVI connectors to Sony HDMI and the trouble calls. I have checked the Sony bulletins in Canada/US and there are occassional issues with "other" STBs, but 99.9% of THOSE issues are able to be cleared up by config changes in the STB. This is not the case with Motorola's boxes. Again, we can agree to disagree... and that is the case. |

BTW, the Pace is a separate issue which is specific to Pace, not Sony.
