Default Product of Canada? Don't be so sure

IMHO, much more of a genuine "scandal" than any of the last 20 or so our Parliamentarians seem to like to spend so much time on.

MarketPlace did a half hour on this in October 2007. See:

Thanks 57, I did see that on Marketplace. Thanks for providing the link. Lots of great information.

I watched that Marketplace episode as well. Very misleading.

Jeez, now you got me worried. I bought a pair of jeans recently trying to stick with "made in Canada" products. (Black Kirkland jeans -- Costco -- $19.99)

So they may be made in Sri Lanka after all?? Maybe they used Canadian thread? Or the "value" of the Kirkland label may be worth more than 50% of the selling price??

How am I going to reduce greenhouse gases if I can't trust the labels?

"Labelling apple juice made from Chinese or Chilean apples as a "Product of Canada" is about as misleading and deceptive as describing the Toronto Maple Leafs as a Stanley Cup contender."

I love that quote.

Back on topic, I agree that if I see "Product of Canada" I expect it to be grown and processed in Canada. I have no problem eating Imported food, but I do not like deceptive labels.

We're talking food here Ricketty. A lot of people are quite senstive when it comes to what they put inside their body.

And with the spotty record of food originating in China, I'd sure like to know that if it says "Product of Canada" it really IS a product of Canada. To say nothing of those trying to cut greenhouse gas emissions with a "1000 mile diet" (because 100 miles is far too restrictive).

Maybe but this should have been addressed long ago. Should we truly beleve this just as much as labelling claiming made in Canada? Laws and politics can be both twisted to fit the "claimer". This sort of marketting lie has been going on for years and government always kept their eyes close to any of it and it means money and business.

We can expect expensive stores to open up, like Whole Foods, but for Made In Canada foods. A slippery slope.

If there's a significant demand from consumers, no specialty stores will be needed. You can bet Canadian supermarket chains like Loblaws, Sobeys, etc. will respond.
