I was reading through the comcast thread at another forum and the discussion move to the point of sattelite bandwidth because Comcast systems rely on sattelite to receive the bulk of the channels.
dr1394 has calculated that 40.46 Mbps per transponder for HD channels with 1 transponder typically carrying 3 HD channels which works out to about an average 13.48 Mbps per channel, so I wonder what the bitrate was for Canadian systems? Symbol rate * Modulation system(if QPSK this is 2, 8PSK its 3) * FEC * Reed Solomon(188/204). Starchoice/Shaw Broadcast Service/Shaw Cable 37.7 Mbps usually with 3 channels per transponder. (12.6 Mbps/channel avg) Bell 30.7 Mbps usually with 2-3 channels per transponder. (10.2-15.3 Mbps/channel avg) Last edited by hugh; 2008-04-27 at 04:15 PM. |

EV and Dish use the same technology so the systems are comparable. FEC differs between the two systems though. (I forget the numbers.) Dish is also being slightly more aggressive at rolling out 8PSK and MPEG4.

When Bell rolls out MPEG4 enventually we will notice a difference in bandwith.
