Default Desperately seeking 1920x1080 VGA capable TV

After some research, it seems Samsung LNT4069 will accept 1920x1080 via VGA. I have had two units with "mode not supported" message. I am now at a loss.

Samsung support (Level 1, Level 2) told me it is not possible, until I pointed to them that this feature was stated on Page 44 of the manual. Then they changed their story to "defective unit".

Since HTPC is my main program source, this is a showstopper for me.

What are other TVs similar (price, capability) to Samsung LNT4069 supporting 1920x1080 via VGA?

Thanks.

May be difficult to find, but I believe there are some. Another option would be to get a video card with an HDMI output and capable of 1080p. That way you could use the HDMI input on any 1080P HDTV. See also the following thread, especially the newer posts.

My KDL40W3000 has a PC input capable of 1080P - these compatibilities are usually listed in the operating manual under the PC input.

Thanks for the link. It seems to have more griefs about not getting 1920x1080 from a PC.

HDMI is an option. But I would need about 25' to 30' of high quality HDMI or DVI cable, not a small expense.

I have been using the VGA set up (sound via USB) with a 720P TV (at 1280x720) for a few years.

The Toshiba XF550 series can take VGA input signals. This TV is a rather high end unit, but I believe their lower cost "PC Gamers" TVs will also have similar VGA input capabilities.

My 47" Westinghouse LVM-47W1 has 1920x1080 support on VGA - perfect for Xbox 360.

I thought my video card has dual DVI. Upon further review, it has one DVI and one VGA output. With the previous video card, my monitor sometimes got confused with VGA input and required changing resolution back and forth to lock onto the right resolution. I have had no problem since using DVI with the current video card.

I could still spare the DVI output for the TV. But I'd prefer keeping DVI for the monitor for the convenience.

Toshiba TVs top out at SXGA (1280x1024, not even a 16:9 aspect ratio). Sharp TVs are similarly limited.

Westinghouse was perhaps the first to come out with 1080p display. But I think it has not kept pace with the competition. And I heard you need to ship the TV to the States for service.

Sony XBR4/5 & V/W3000 series TVs (40'' & larger) all support 1920x1080p/60 rez over VGA input. Not sure about Samsung's 69 series, but 61 series TVs definitely supported 1920x1080p/60 over VGA (in fact Samsung LCD sets always supported native panel resolution over VGA input in the past).

Samsung 69 series supports 1080p vga, according to its manual and some forum posts. But even their Level 2 tech said it does not, when I called.

My take is that most buyers don't care about 1080p vga. Nor do the Samsung tech and quality control. So although in theory it should, it is a crap shoot in reality.

I am afraid it's the same situation for other brands (most of them don't support 1080p vga to start with).

Are you sure your video card/driver supports 1920x1080p/60 over D-Sub?

Yes. Tested on a LCD monitor. The monitor status display was showing the input was 1920x1080 at 60hz, not the optimal for the monitor (1920x1200 at 60hz).

I pulled the connector from the TV and plugged right into the monitor, no cable changes whatsoever.

Actually, the owner's manual for Samsung LN-T4669 states that the set supports resolution 1920x1080 at vertical refresh rate 59.934Hz (not 60Hz). Sure thing, 1920x1080/60 signal sent to D-sub input of this TV results in "mode not supported" . However changing 1920x1080 signal refresh rate to 59Hz seems to solve the problem. Go figure...

Interesting. I noticed the manual for the new 650 series says 59.934 for VGA and 60.000 for HDMI/DVI in the table. The pdf copy I have for 65 series says 60 for VGA and 59.934 for HDMI/DVI in the table. All manuals say 60 in the text description.

Anyway, how did you set the refresh rate to 59hz? NVidia Control Panel shows a list of available rates but no 59. I did try 30 and 70 to no avail.

One last bit of oddity. I tried 1920x1200 at 60hz (signal is okay as tested on the monitor). The TV actually accepted it but interpreted as 1400x1200 (don't remember the exact number).

nVidia NVS 110M control panel in my laptop showed 2 refresh rate options for Samsung 4669 (59 & 60 Hz). Tried 59 & it worked. You may want to update your nVidia driver.

Thanks for the great tip. I wish that I still have the TV. I don't have the heart to haul another one home right now.

It seems there are more timing options under Display/Manage Custom Resolutions in NVidia Control Panel.

You should sell this tip to Samsung tech support. This should save some people from their miseries but would reduce the number of open box specials
