Default PS3 2.20 Update By End of March

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/20/p...ray-this-mont/

Mostly Bluray 2.0 related. Maybe this should be in the Bluray forum.

Default v2.20 bringing BD-Live to PS3 in the next few days

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/...d-live-to-ps3/

Quote:
Most notably, the update enables the PS3 to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live. You can connect now to the Internet while playing discs that support BD-Live to obtain additional content and special features. These features vary from disc to disc, and will keep your BD discs fresh with new content and in some cases exclusive content only accessible to owners of BD-Live enabled discs. On April 8th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The 6th Day and Walk Hard on Blu-ray; these titles will be among the first to take advantage of BD-Live. With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality.

Here are some of the other new features/enhancements that will be included in Firmware v2.20:
The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.

-You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB.
Resume Play

- begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.
Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.

The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media.

There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20 - we’ll provide more specifics as the update is about to go live.

Good news. I had read it was farther away than this but it makes sense given there are Sony Blu-ray movies coming out with BD Live features. in 3-4 weeks.

Now DTS-HD MA is left to bring to the table, along with in game menu system (XMB)....maybe in movie too? We dont know if that is possible. Apparently the later will come in around June, so hopefully DTS-HD MA comes along with that, in time for my receiver upgrade plans

A very, very exciting update! They've finally included the ability to resume a disc that has been stopped, even if the disc has been ejected. I'm very excited, and happy this will be out before the rumored "Summer" date we heard before.

Perfect! I too have been looking forward to this resume feature. It probably took them an hour of coding to implement it...

On a related note, Sony has said their first two BD-Live Blu-ray titles will be Walk Hard and The 6th day - both releasing on April 8. So there will be something to try out the new firmware with.

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/03/20...ses-for-april/

I'm pretty skeptical that I would have any interest in these features but I will likely try them out. There are so many Blu-rays that I have watched that I have not even looked at the regular special features that I keep thinking I will some do that some day first.

I agree the resume feature is nice. It already works if you still have the disc in the drive and don't power down the PS3 but it will be nice to work in more situations.

I have also heard the browser will be updated to allow video streaming and faster loading.

All and all this is gonna be a great update. Resume, BD-Live and the added browser functionality will all be great.

Hopefully HOME, DTS-MA and in-game XMB arent far behind.

what I don't get is the lack of any kind of DTS MA support. by now it should be able to either bitstream it or decode it and send it as PCM. either way it should be on there somehow.

Resume play is the best feature in my mind.

The ability to use your PSP as your music remote sounds interesting

DTS MA is not there yet because they want to wait until at least one reasonably priced standalone player has it first. Once the first one of those is on the market they will likely roll out the DTS MA internal decoding on the PS3 very quick. It has been confirmed by some Blu-ray insiders that it is coming for sure.

They don't want to harm sales of the standalone players more on this feature. Of course the PS3 has been and likely still will be the best bang for the buck Blu-ray player for the immediate future.

While somewhat off topic I expect yet another price drop before the end of 2008 on the PS3. The fact that MS has placed the 360 core right around the Wii makes Sony the only player in the premium market so to speak although as we all know that's a bit like apples and oranges, no wi-fi, no HDD etc.

Keeping it ON topic this may well be what drives me to buying a PSP. When convergence works it's a beau-ti-ful thing!

Hooray for resume playback!

Everything else, sure, why not. I barely have enough time to watch movies, let alone all the extra features.

To paraphrase the Red Stripe Beer guy:

Boo no DTS-MA.

Hooray resume-play feature!
