After months of indecision, I finally bought a set of Jamo speakers for my home theater system. We had speakers wires put into the walls when our basement was finished a few years ago. But I'm unsure what's the proper height for the rear speakers.
That part of the basement is a bit over 20 feet long. The couch is 10 feet from the screen and front speakers, and 10 feet in front of the back wall. Should I hang the rear speakers near the ceiling, or should they be placed so that they're at about the level of your ears when sitting (which would roughly correspond to the height of the fronts)? Thanks for any advice. |

Martini, the height of the surrounds should place the tweeter two to three feet above seated ear level. As an example -- when seated, my ears are about three feet off the floor, so I placed my surrounds so that the tweeter is 5.5 feet from the floor.
The reason for placing them up higher than seated ear level is to help the sound become more diffuse. The surrounds are used mainly to create ambiance, even though they will frequently be used for discrete sounds and panning. When the surrounds are at seated ear level, they're too easily localizable. cheers, supervij
