Default Circuit City (US) Swaps your HD DVD Player for Blu Ray

If you're ready to switch teams, the red dot retailer is offering a trade-in/trade-up deal on recently purchased HD DVD players.

Strange, I don't really see a difference between a regular exchange program and this.

You cant usually return an item you purchased more than 15-30 days ago. Im sure a lot of people that got HDDVD during/for christmas will be very glad to learn of this.

I wonder if BestBuy and subsidiaries (BestBuy Canada and Futureshop) will follow suit for Xmas owners...

That is a great move by CC. Hopefully others will follow including north of the border.

Shabbs, are you thinking of abandoning the ship?

I've had a pretty good sense that I'd go "purple" eventually with the way the war was playing out. I have no problems with that. I'm a fan of movies and HD. After all, that's what it's all about, isn't it?

Then I hope they follow CC's example in Canada, major price drop on the BluRay and you have got it made

Good stuff.

Prices in Canada suck right now for BD players. FS's blu player section won't be selling many players for some time to come. The only deal they ever have is on the BD1400... yikes!

There's a promo coming from FS (BB too I think) that will give you a $100 dollar trade in value to purchase a BD player, it might be for the dual format Samsung though not sure atm.

If the treatment we've received from Cdn retailers re HD DVD hardware/software is any indication, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Circuit City has often done things like this, when Amp'd Mobile went out of business last year Circuit City offered to take back Amp'd hardware sold up to 90 days before the shutdown.

Futureshop has a promotion where they're offering $100 off any BD/HD combo player in exchange for your old HD-DVD player. Which in one way is sort of nice since it insures you can still play your old media, but in another, larger way is just a ploy to get rid of their combo-players.

Too bad they aren't offering the credit on plain-old BD players...then it may have been something to congratulate them on.

Edit: It should be noted that the returned players are going to a good cause, and that's certainly not a bad thing.

Ya, however, Futureshop jacked up the pricing of one of their players by about $300 after this announcement. I forget the model, but it was $499 2 days ago, and now it's $799 or something...

You sure about that? I've been sort of keeping an eye on things on the combo player side (wouldn't mind the Samsung), and from what I remember the LG and Samsung have always been in the high-hundreds. Hmm...

Well there are only 2 combo players that they have:

Samsung BD-UP5000
LG BH200

These are going for $900 and $800 today. I think maybe the Samsung was $100 less the other day but not sure. I really don't see why anyone would buy one of these though. Just get (or keep) a sub $100 HD DVD player if you need it to watch HD DVD movies.
