So does a receiver to go with the PS3 have to be able to decode the new codecs. I understand that it decodes them internally and sends the audio as PCM. So will any reciever that accepts PCM over HDMI be good. Or do I need to get one like the Onkyo 605. What recievers ou there are a good match for the PS3? Thanks for the help.

There are no best receivers for the PS3.

However, am I correct to assume that HDMI or optical is a must as the BluRay would downscale video otherwise, am I correct?

Optical only carries audio. The HDMI can go to your set, it doesn't have to go to a receiver.
Folks can correct me if I am wrong, but you can use component cables with the PS3.

Although you can use component video cables, the PS3 will not upconvert SD DVDs to HD formats over component, only via HDMI.
Regarding the lossless HD audio formats, I don't believe they can be sent via optical or coaxial audio connections, only DD5.1 and DTS. You may wish to look at the following regarding AVR features: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=76082

Any current consumer upconverting player or HD-DVD player will only upconvert SD-DVDs via HDMI. A while back there were a couple of upconverting DVD players that, with a hack, could upconvert via component video. They are no longer available, except used.
HD-DVD players can send 720P/1080i via component video, which seems counter-intuitive (until ICT takes effect, which may never happen).

So essentially want a reciever that will pass the 1080P video through to my TV and one that can take in the PCM audio via the HDMI. Is this correct??? Do all revievers read the PCM audio that is sent by the PS3?

Any entry level model should be able to handle PCM. HDMI seems the best way to output audio from the PS3 to ensure you really get the best quality.

A very good option is the Sony STR-DG910
It handles 7.1PCM, 24hz playback and of course 1080p - everything the PS3 has to offer. Oh and it has 3 HDMI inputs and transcoding to HDMI. Everything you need, for a good price (about $300-400)

Thanks that is the reciever I was leaning towards. And fits my budget so a little more money can be spent on the speakers.
