Moving a Hitachi 57F510 - Canadian TV, Computing and Home Theatre Forums

Hi Folks, At some point, I need to move a 57F510 down to my basement. I believe this set can be disconnected into two halves (top and bottom), but of course, the manual doesn't recommend it. Has anyone tried it? Any tips / hints or problems to watch out for?

Also, there used to be a few folks on this forum who would do an ISF calibration... anyone still around (it's been a while since I've visited....)

I have the 57F520. When Sears guys brought it they had to take it apart to take into the basement. They were nice guys, but they'd never done it before, and did not read instructions carefully enugh. At one point they had removed all *but one* screw and, naturally, had trouble lifting the top off. Here are some tips:

1. Read the instructions very carefully. If it says three screws and you see only two, keep looking.
2. The top should come off easily. If it doesn't, don't try force. Re-read the instructions and look for that "third screw".
3. When putting it back together, make sure you have the small "control console" (a board with some components and connectors) back in place, and all wires/cables that attach to the connectors in place. It's hard to explain, but in my case, we had already started putting some bolts back in when we found out that some cable was on the wrong side and coule not be pulled out without lifting the top again.

By the way, we moved about a18 months later and I had to disassemble it again for the move. This time I had a friend from work help me out, and we had it taken apart, moved upstairs and put back together in less than an hour. When I plugged it in at the new place it worked like a charm.

Great, thanks for the tips. Did you have any alignment / PQ issues after taking it apart, moving and re-assembling it?

I had no problems with alignment or PQ. I did, of course, run the magic-focus, just in case. After the second move I also did the 9-point manual focus, but that's pretty much maintenance that should be done periodically anyway.

I guess the important thing to remember is not to drop it anywhere along the way, and to try and keep the openings (bottom of the top part and top of the bottom part) covered up if they are going to remain open for any lengh of time. You probably don't want dust or dirt to get inside. I suppose you can even go a step further and put something right over the guns (maybe some Saran Wrap?) but since I have not tried it (or heard anyone else suggesting it) I cannot vouch for it. In my case I only had it taken apart long-enough to get it downstairs (first time) or upstairs (second time) and then re-assembled it immediately afterward.
