Default 7 new point and shoots from Nikon

A lot of new options in the point and shoot market from Nikon.

Nikon COOLPIX L18/L16
Feature Highlights
Easy auto mode and scene modes for carefree shooting
Easy auto mode makes it easier to turn on the camera and shoot without worrying about settings. Easy access to 14 different scene modes and three movie modes also ensures shooting that is tuned to give the best results to match the moment.

Anti-shake AE for great pictures at great ease
Effortlessly take better pictures with the COOLPIX L18 and L16 with new Anti-shake AE. It detects subject movement and camera shake, and automatically overcomes blur by adjusting to high shutter speeds and higher ISO sensitivity.

Three Unique Nikon Image Innovations
The COOLPIX L18 and L16 feature a selection of three innovative functions that provide the ability to actually improve the quality of images within the camera. Face-priority AF* automatically finds, then focuses on people’s faces for crisp, clear results time after time. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically compensates to help eradicate traces of the annoying red-eye effect that can sometimes be encountered during flash photography. And D-Lighting can be applied to improve underexposed images or shots taken with too much backlight. D-Lighting automatically creates a copy of the image with detail added where necessary, but with well-exposed areas left completely untouched.

*Face recognition capability may be limited in some shooting conditions.

ISO 1600 capability for better pictures in lower light
Making it easier to take great-looking pictures in lower lighting conditions, or to capture fast-moving subjects with outstanding clarity, the COOLPIX L18 and L16 accurately measure available light to automatically select the optimal sensitivity setting for the shot between the range of ISO 64 to as high as ISO 1600.

Default Flooding the market?

I really do not understand the point in releasing this many very similar cameras.
Not just Nikon but other brands do this as well.
I can understand the need to have selection and choice
But there is so very little difference between some models.

To hit various price points and styling features.

Retailers want cameras at various price points and they want different styles so they feel they have a complete offering for consumers. Manufacturers can either comply or lose precious retail space to competitors.
