I'm looking at getting a new DVD player or 5-disc changer. One feature that I am interested in is mp3 playback. I know players that feature mp3 playback will play a CD-R of mp3s, but what about CD-RWs? What about DVD-Rs? What about DVD-RWs?
The more compatible a player is, the more interested I am going to be in it. There are specifications online for all the models I've looked into (mostly Sony) but it's not like these specs read "this model plays mp3s from all types of CDs and DVDs" - it will say it plays mp3s and then the 8 different kinds of DVDs. So, I'm lost as to which model to get because I don't want to find out it has limited compatibility after the fact. Can anybody offer any assistance? For example, if you have a DVD changer, you could tell me what it does and doesn't play. This would help me finally make a decision. |

70's,
Have a look at the site below. Enter the player model you are interested in in the search box and if somebody has entered the specs it will usually tell you what discs will play in it. These days pretty well all players will play any type of disc (except HD or Blu-Ray, special player needed) and they will also play MP3's. The only only format that's hit or miss is Divx. Sometimes the manufacturer will list the ability to play MPEG4 so Divx may play if it isn't listed. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers Congo

Any player that plays CD-RWs will play MP3s from them. The only real question is whether it will play MP3s from DVDs. The videohelp site will let you search for DVD-MP3. If it works for DVDs it will almost certainly work for DVD+/-RWs.
One thing you should watch out for is some DVD players have a limit on the number of files they will play. |
