Default EA Leaps into Free Video Games

EA Leaps into Free Video Games

The new distribution model and pricing structure, a first for Europe and the U.S., is expected to supplement—not replace—retail sales. But according to Gerhard Florin, EA's executive vice-president and general manager of international publishing, it should produce a lucrative new source of revenue and broaden the company's audience to include people who don't play the games now.

Not sure how I feel about that. I don't like paying subscription fees period - I don't even have a XBL gold membership. I would also be annoyed by ads/product placement. I am still annoyed that they show ads in movie theaters after I already paid to be there!

Still, as an anti-piracy measure it makes sense.

I think EA Games should be concentrating on putting out good games for the next-gen consoles instead of the hack jobs they are currently throwing out there.

I could see this. I like the idea of being able to download games instead of lining up at the store. I'm also new to console gaming, and I hate having to switch discs when I want to play new games. Nice to have it on the harddrive. And then, if you really, really like a game, I could see paying a dollar here, a dollar there, for new features. New cars, etc. Get more playability out of a game you like.
