Default 85:15 for Blu-ray in hi-def Software Sales for week ending Jan. 13

The more detailed information won't likely be available until tomorrow but some information has been published. This is for the 1st full week after the Warner decision to back Blu-ray only.

Quote:
the top 10 high-definition disc sellers are all Blu-ray Disc releases, according to an analysis of Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales numbers by Home Media Magazine’s market research department.

Net HD DVD sales, according to Nielsen, constituted only 15% of hi-def disc sales last week. And the top HD DVD seller, The Kingdom, sold just 10% as many copies as the top Blu-ray Disc release, 3:10 to Yuma.
So 85:15 Blu-ray (almost 6 to 1) for the week with all the top 10 titles being Blu-ray and the top Blu-ray title selling 10x as many copies as the top selling HD DVD title.

I hope this helps hasten the conclusion of this war.

The firesale on hardware muddies the water, I wonder how much so.

Not surprising considering the Warner announcement and the lack of new titles.

Any word on the volumes? I'm sure they were very low, especially on the HD DVD side.

also:
- lots of BD B1G1 sales that week
- aftermath of warner news

definitely looks bad for the HD DVD camp. Time will tell...

Exactly my thinking.
The important data to watch going forward is the ratio of DVD : all HDM (essentially BD). This to me will indicate whether Warner's strategy is working, or not. It may also be an indicator if the decline in DVD sales was due to HDM apathy or an increase in piracy.

Or people enjoying their existing DVD library with their new up-converting DVD players? What's old is new again.

The Blu-ray release of 3:10 TO YUMA also debuted at number one and marked one of the 10 best Blu-ray debuts to date.

3:10 To Yuma sounds like it did pretty well according to the above article.

We won't know this until the end of this year after the studios have switched. Volume increase will not happend over night.

I would not be surprised if that title alone out did all of HD DVD that week.

I had ordered it just based on comments from a couple friends of mine. Pretty keen on checking it out.

Off topic but I watched 3:10 to Yuma last night on Blu-ray. It is a really good movie and looks and sounds amazing of course. I rented it but will buy it if it goes on sale some time.

The thing is Shabbs, there won't be much in the way of new releases for HD-DVD....ever. Releases will be pretty paltry going forward, and the crappy catalogue releases that Universal comes up with won't help. I'd be surprised if the average ratio isn't 80:20 going forward, with the odd 90:10 thrown in for good measure. The pressure for Paramount & Universal is really going to mount when you have 10 times as many sales for the top BD movie vs HD-DVD.

No doubt about it. P/DW's Q1 slate looks pretty brutal and unless Universal pulls out a massive set of catalog releases, this is the way it's going to be for a while.

Universal is suppose to release title names today actually. Saw it on the news somewhere.

This is bad though, i do wish hd dvd would pack it in now.

Players won't have much impact I don't think, regarding the HD DVD new prices. They will get their free movies and move on. It's no risk buying one right now at those prices.

Well they can probably drag it out for a couple of months but if they want to have an Xmas this year they are going to have made a decision in house by March or April at the latest. That will lead to hiring people who understand BDJ and other initiatives in order to get things moving. The point being that at that stage word will probably start leaking out.

That is of course unless the investors have their say first. You can sit around talking about how insignificant HDM is right now but real investors don't care about what is happening today they are going to be looking down the road and I highly doubt they are going to take kindly to either studio if they aren't at least hedging their bets. With the writers strike and any one else that wants to strike to follow the studios are going to need some catalog money to stay in the black and 15% ain't gonna cut it.
