Default Pioneer announces $599 MSRP receiver that decodes all advanced/lossless codecs

An interesting looking line of receivers...

Pioneer is expanding its CES lineup with four new audio-video receivers, one of which supports the new high-definition audio codecs found in Blu-ray and HD DVD. The VSX-518-K, VSX-818V-K, VSX-918V-K, and VSX-1018TXH-K A/V receivers all feature Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration with an included microphone for tweaking acoustics in the room, three 1080p-capable component inputs, and Auto Level Control for equalizing volume between sources. The VSX-518-K, 818V, and 918V all feature P.H.A.T (Pioneer Hybrid Amplifier Technology) power sources and support for WMA9 Pro over 5.1 channels, with the 518 dropping support for XM and Sirius satellite, iPod, and HDMI inputs. The big news is the VSX-1018TXH-K, with its support for 130 watts over 7.1 channels using a Direct Energy power supply, HDMI upscaling to 1080p, six digital inputs, and support for the lossy Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution, and lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio codecs. The VSX-518-K is priced at $199, the VSX-818V-K at $249, the VSX-918V-K at $349, all releasing in April, and the VSX-1018TXH-K will come to market in June for $599.

Lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for under $600?
Wow.
And from Pioneer of all companies.
I better start saving!

Yes between this and all the new Blu-ray players there is a whole lot more choice.

$599 is US pricing, wonder how much it would be in Canada after taking into consideration the gouge factor?
I definitely will be keeping an eye on this one.

I've never bought or been a big fan of Pioneer home audio, but that does seem like a pretty sweet unit.

Finally, a replacement for my -1015! I've been holding off on updating because the previous models couldn't process sound over HDMI, but this finally looks like another winner. I just hope it comes in silver...

I think we have a winner!

It decodes everything, and switches my pre-HDMI XBOX 360 to 1080p HDMI (my television doesn't accept 1080p over component).

I assume it does the PS3 TrueHD over PCM with those HDMI 1.3 inputs?

I was planning on upgrading my receiver (Yamaha RX-V596) next year. It's nice to know I can get one around the same price that does everything I want.

it does look really nice.

I don't however like the exposed connections at the front. Think it makes the stylish and sleek front look ugly.

Just an opinion of course.

I highly applaud the features and functionality of this receiver at that price point

If nothing else this forces other manufacturers to offer similar features at lower prices and thats always a good thing.

Onkyo's TX-SR605?

However, hopefully this Pioneer doesn't have the same limitations as the Onkyo.

Looks like a nice over all reciever. Will be curious when it comes to Canadian pricing as well. Probably depends on what the dollar is doing.

I always wanted a P.H.A.T receiver. Not sure if I should chuckle at that or just

Street date of June. I am in the market for a new receiver. Hmm June is a long way away.
