Default Hi-def hardware sales a dead heat?

At Toshiba's press conference today at CES they put up a slide showing the share of hi-def hardware by manufacturer. It isn't clear whether this is "standalone" only or their new word of "dedicated" but it does not include the PS3 of course....

It was only a few months ago that the number (end of September) that NPD said it was HD DVD 53, Blu-ray 44, DF 3.

.......their continual penchant for not recognizing the what is it now 8-10 million? PS3....pretty much sums up their sorry state & perspective in general.

So, it does not include the PS3 but does include the 360 add-on? BD stand alones are ahead of HD DVD if that is the case.

Any such comparison should include the 360 add-ons because there is no other reason to buy those add-ons except to watch HD DVD movies.

I agree, but a reason some people dont buy the Ps3 is that it looks bad in the hi-fi rack. Still, it looks dead even, and the PS3 is likely the factor for the software sales lead.

It is still a long ways from the massive HD-DVD sales lead that has been trumpeted on all the boards.

Yes, it seems like that was trumped up FUD, for the last few months anyways.

I gotta say, that slide does seem like a huge departure from what we've heard from Toshiba and the HD DVD PG up until now. I was under the impression that Toshiba's SA sales were 2:1 over Blu-ray SA sales. Are we sure that slide includes the 360 add-on? Would it not be listed as Microsoft?

Hmmm....

I doubt it includes the 360 addon but they don't show which definition they are using - "standalone" or "dedicated".

Even without the 360 addon though, being neck and neck with the Blu-ray side still seems to say that Blu-ray had a better Q4 on "standalone" sales than was perceived by most.

From what I was reading elsewhere, I believe the BDA may release some numbers this week that illustrates this point. BD standalone players sold much better than has been perceived (at least on this forum) and may have outsold HD DVD players over the last few months. Will have to find out if that is true for sure, but Toshiba's numbers sure indicate that...

Edit: Certainly a surprise to me, give the price difference

I wonder if the Venturer sales are counted as Toshibas, included in "All Other", deemed insignificant, or just ignored?

A serious movie enthusiast is not going to balk at $200 if it means getting a broader selection of movies to watch.
